*Genesis
-Genesis means “beginning” or “origin”
I. Mankind in general. Ch1-11 -ch1,2-Creation 1.Creator- Name for God in ch01=Elohim=infinite strength and absolute faithfulness=God. Used often to refer to God when he is dealing with the physical universe. Name for God in ch02=YHWH=LORD. Used often for when God is dealing with the people. God’s relationship is different with people than with the rest of creation. 2. Seven days-Hebrew word for day in Gen1 is Yom; does not necessarily mean 24 hours, but can also mean time, age. However, every “day” ends with “evening and the morning, the X day” RESEARCH THIS Important to note, God can create AGE as well. -Light -Water, sky, etc -Land, plants -Sun,moon,stars -Birds,fish -Animals,man -ch3,4-Fall of man 1. Temptation-Temptation comes from Satan. Gen3:1-6 2. Sin-Satan tempted Eve first, then Adam sinned as well>Human race fell. 3. Result: loss of innocence, glory and a sense of guilt. Sin makes you lose your desire to fellowship with God; they avoided God when He called. No one wanted to take responsibility; God blamed them all. 4. Promise to redeem-God is a God of justice, but also of love. Redeemer promised in Gen3:15. 5. Progression. One sin paves the way for more sin. Ch04 - EX: Anger, jealousy, hatred, and then murder. -Ch5-10-Noah & Flood -This section is important because it recounts how far humanity falls. It gets to a point where God feels sorry that He created humans. In Matt 25:37-39, it recounts that before the second coming of Christ, the times will be similar. A pointless life about partying, etc -Ch11-Tower of Babel -God commanded humanity to be fruitful and replenish the earth. People decided to all live together in one spot(land of Shinar) and build a tower to reach the heavens. Instead of humbly submitting to God’s will, they decided to disobey and try to “equal” God. RESULT: God caused them to speak different languages and then the groups ended up spreading. Babel means confusion.
II. Patriarchs of Israel. Ch12-50 -ch12-25-Abraham-God’s plan of a redeemer starts being set into motion with Abraham. God tells Abraham to move to a different land. He will bless Abraham and those who bless Abraham and curse those who curse Abraham. Abraham doesn’t live to see God begin most of His plan. However, God fulfills His Promise. -ch21-35-Life of Isaac- God reaffirms his promise to Abraham. Isaac has Ishmael and Jacob. Isaac has a lapse of faith because he doesn’t have a child even though he is old. Ishmael is born. Ishmael is the ancestor of the modern day Arabs. Disobeying God and losing faith in God has its consequences. Gen 26:2-5 -ch25-49-Life of Jacob-Isaac has 12 sons, the fathers of the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob renamed Israel. Jesus came from tribe of Judah. -ch30-50-Life of Joseph-God takes care of His own. Joseph’s life wasn’t exactly comfortable for the first 30 or so years, but he remained faithful to God and God rewarded him for that. All things work together for good to them that love the LORD. Rom 8:28
-Genesis begins with life, and ends with death. Death of Joseph.
