*Introduction to Bible Survey – Importance
-We need to study the Bible because it reveals God’s character to us. God’s Word shows us the truth. Also, God commands us to be diligent workmen to be able to “straightly cut” the Word of truth. 2 Tim. 2:5
I. Origin -Written in different lands -Over period of 1500 years -Over 40 authors -Written in at least 2 different languages.
-God is the author of all prophetic Scripture. 2 Pet. 1:21. Inspired by God. 2Tim 3:16
II. Theme = Redemption of Mankind -In the same chapter that man first sinned, a plan for salvation is prophesied (A Man born of the woman would defeat the devil – Gen 3:15).
OT – Main theme is preparation of the One who will be born when it is time. Gal 4:4. Fulfilled in NT NT – The theme is the promised Messiah has come.
III. Div. In Bible. 66 books total. -2 main sections: OT & NT -Testament means “covenant” or “agreement.” -OT-Old Covenant-God dealing with people under the Law -NT-New Covenant- God dealing with people under grace
-OT-4 Sections-39 books -Pentateuch means “five-volume book.” Law. Gen-Deu. Written by Moses. John 7:19 -History – 12 books. Jos-Neh. God brings Israel into Promised land. -Poetry – Wisdom Literature, books of encouragement, comfort, wisdom, and songs. Job-SoS -Prophets essentially means a speaker for God. Exo 7:1,2. 17 books; 2 sections. -Major- A LOT of writing. 5 books; Isa-Dan. -Minor-Not so much writing. 12 books. Hosea-Mal -NT-5 sections-27 books -Gospels – 4 books. Biographical books of Jesus. -History – Acts. Origin and growth of early church. -Pauline Epistles – 14 books (if counting Hebrews). 3 sections. Almost ½ of the NT. -Church epistles – 9 books. Rom-2Thes. -Pastoral epistles – 3 books. 1Tim-Tit. -Personal epistles – 2 books. Phil,Heb -General epistles – 7 books. Epistles written by other than Paul. Has author’s name. Jam-Jud. -Prophecy – Revelation. Written by John; last book.
