Effects of the New Media

In the current age of new media the traditional balance between law, norms, market and architecture, that Lessig discusses, has transformed along with technology, to produce a world of disorder and mayhem.  Before the emergence of the Internet, the law could effectively limit the ability to copy and share content by imposing penalties on those who violated copyright.  Now, with the effects of Internet media on our market and social norms, legal protection for the copyright owner’s rights have been lost, or at the very least, disregarded.  In the content industry’s efforts to protect itself from the detrimental costs of technological innovation, we now face the consequences as many members of The Writers Guild of America have gone on strike, taking new episodes of America’s favorite television shows with them.  It is widely expected by industry observers that new media will eventually replace media, both DVD in the home video market and television in the broadcasting market, as the primary means for media distribution.  Something must be done . . .
