About SEEJ and ELS

Students for Environmental & Economic Justice (SEEJ) is dedicated to the just distribution of environmental benefits to, and the amelioration of environmental harms concentrated in, communities of color and low-income communities. With a deep commitment to  democratized, community-based decision-making, we work to
  • Foster an activist community among advocates whose broad diversity of social justice interests intersect with environmental justice
  • Support the development of just forms of community and economic development, including models that support worker ownership, "green" job creation and growth, and build community wealth
  • Create practice opportunities for students, and build relationships, with local community-based organizations
  • Support and maintain environmental justice curricular and research opportunities at Boalt
  • Combine litigation, transactional, policy and organizing approaches to building community power.

Berkeley Law's Environmental Law Society (ELS) is an organization of students who are interested in the intersection of environmental law and social justice. In addition to sponsoring the symposium, ELS provides the resources necessary to take effective action on a variety of environmental issues, including the San Francisco Bay, endangered species, old-growth forests, recycling, organic food standards, fair trade issues, and environmental justice.
