Wood Badge 2012

Wood Badge is the embodiment of Scouting spirit – a mountaintop experience – the highest level of leadership training offered at the Council level teaching advanced leadership skills applicable to every leader and providing a common foundation for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venture Programs. You and your unit staff need to be a part of this fun, challenging course. If you have questions, feel free to contact me at the address at the bottom of the page. More information also can be found here.

100th Anniversary Of The Eagle Scout Award

Did you know 2012 is the centennial anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award?  Yep, it’s been 100 years since the first scout earned his Eagle back in 1912.  His name was Arthur Rose Eldred, a 17-year-old from Long Island, New York.  Since then, more than 2 million Scouts have earned the rank of Eagle.  In 1982, 13-year-old Alexander Holsinger of Normal, Illinois, was recognized as the one-millionth Eagle Scout.  In 2009, Anthony Thomas of Lakeville, Minnesota was the two-millionth.

To commemorate this history, a special-edition patch is available for those who earn the Eagle Scout Award this year.  If you have any boys on the verge of accomplishing his Eagle, this could be a little more incentive to git ‘er done!  So don’t wait until the last minute.  Get those papers turned in early since the application process can take some time too!

BSA Innovation Challenge

The Boy Scouts of America and Edison Nation® present an exciting competition designed to showcase the incredible creative ingenuity of today's youth.

Boy Scouts of America, under license to Edison Nation, invites all creative thinkers ages 7 to 21 to submit their ideas to the BSA Innovation Challenge. Edison Nation will spend up to $1 million to develop the products and make them a reality. The idea-to-shelf" product developer will do everything from designing your product, making the prototypes and filing the patents-all you have to do is invent! Imagine... if your invention is selected, you could:

  • See your product brought to market!
  • Be named as "Inventor" on the patent!
  • Earn royalties for the life of the patent!
  • Appear on the award-winning Everyday Edisons TV series!
This Challenge is open to all youth inventors - ages 7-21 - boys and girls, Scouts and non-Scouts.

For complete details, go to www.edisonnation.com/boyscouts.

A Message From Our Scout Executive:

The subject of child abuse has been very prevalent in the media lately.  We wanted to remind everyone of the new policy regarding mandatory reporting for the Boy Scouts of America.

Any persons involved in Scouting shall report to local authorities any good faith suspicion or belief that any child is or has been physically or sexually abused, physically or emotionally neglected, exposed to any form of violence or threat, exposed to any form of sexual exploitation including the possession, manufacture, or distribution of child pornography, online solicitation, enticement, or showing of obscene material.  No person may abdicate this reporting responsibility to any other person.  This policy is found in the online Guide to Safe Scouting.

Please notify David Truax, Scout Executive, of this report, or of any violation of BSA’s Youth Protection policies, so that he may take appropriate action for the safety of our Scouts, make appropriate notifications and follow-up with investigating agencies.  We can be reached at bsamail.org or 330-580-4272.

Thank you for all you do for Scouting.

David Truax  |  Scout Executive

Hey!

Scouters, Roundtable is more than just calender events for the scoutmaster. It is programming for all of your unit staff. If you have people  (assistant scoutmaster, committee member, OA rep, SPL, etc.) that do not normally attend Roundtable, please encourage them to do so. OA members and SPLs NEED to be there! The more, the merrier! And pass this information along to those scouters without e-mail.

Easing The Webelos To Scout Transition

A troop and its operations can be a bit bewildering when first viewed by new parents and their sons. This is a guide to help explain some of the terms that are used in Scouting in the Killbuck District. This brochure was created by Darcy Becker  for one of her Wood Badge ticket items. As Troops, we have a responsibility to retain as many of these Webelos as possible and not let any fall into the transition gap.

Got Training?

"Every Scout Deserves A Trained Leader"
We've all heard these words before. To put these words into action there is a schedule of training opportunities in Buckeye Council. From the basic Youth Protection Training and the 5 requirements for any Unit Leader to BPI and WoodBadge, you can find the dates for it on this schedule for 2011-2012. The document can be downloaded from the list below.
