PAST EVENTS AND NOTICES Only 2 teams this season following the unavailability of a number of first team players. Still plenty of chess avalable though and an excellent season for the First Team.
The First team came second in division 3, which should lead to promotion into Division 2
LAST SEASON MSCL Confirmation that the 1st Team survive in the 2nd Division, holding Woodpushers to a draw in the final match of the season. The team therefor finished with a record of 1 win 4 dreaws and 3 defeats. AGM

MSCL
Another season draws to a close with the usual situation occuring. The 1st Team, in Division 2 need a draw away to Woodpushers to avoid relegation, best of luck next Monday to the team. The 3rd Team missed out by a very small margin on promotion to the Third Division, coming 3rd by 1/2 a game point. The 2nd Team finished in the bottom half of the 4th Division, but have one remaining chance for redemption, away to St Francis and Haywards Heath neon the 27th.
UCKFIELD EASTER EGG COMPETITION Mark Attree, Ian Gambles and Sam Aggarwal played in the Uckfield egg timer blitz. A terrible thing to do to two old men when there are some very quick kids about, including Sam, who I think ended up winning. Unfortunately for us, Sam was given 40 seconds, whilst the better players received 10 seconds. One player who shall remain nameless was blitzed out in 8 moves. Mark won the prize for best '2nd level player', but then, rather like Tiggers he was the only one. A prize is a prize though!
SNOWBOUND EG
A bit cold and icey on Tuesday 3rd February and only 5 turned up. So a little 5 player all play all 15 minute competition.

CHRISTMAS BLITZ
Won by Adran Waldock and David Fryer
2nd December we held a 10 minute blitz tournament, 6 rounds Swiss. 13 players took part, including a contingent of old friends from Uckfield chess club.
Class will out and David Fryer and Adrian Waldock came top with 5/6, David undefeated, Adrian only losing to David.
Adrian took the 1st Prize on tiebreak, a 2nd hand copy of 'Beat the Grandmasters' by Kristian Kongsted (Gambit Books), though obviously he doesnt really need it.

EMBARRASS YOURSELF WITH MARK 4th November, Mark Attree will talk through a game from last year, one of the few he didn't lose (drawn), but it's an example of the Cambridge Springs Defence in the Queens Gambit and illustrates some of the key points in this opening. There will be questions afterwards! EMBARRASS YOURSELF WITH DAVE SIMPKINS Dave has offered to talk through a couple of his games on September 30th starting 7.30. More a workshop than a lecture, should be about an hour max. MSCL Fixture list out, see Season 2008 SUMMER CHESS No East Grinstead club through the summer, but there are a number of local congresses that should keep your eye in, including the Weald Congress 5th to 6th July, (see details through Sussex Junior Chess) For those of you willing to travel a little further I can recommend the Canal du Saint Martin Club by Gare de l'Est in Paris. They hold a 15 minute competition every second Friday. Best to be prepared for a late night as the competition only starts at 9.30 pm. There is live jazz during the games and one or two of the tables are pretty dark. Great fun if you don't take it seriously and speak a bit of French. According to the web site, they are the most active club in Paris and certainly have the best organiser anywhere (Xavier Rubini). There are 2 videos of the 33rd Rapide (including yours truly) on www.canalsaintmartin.blogspot.com/ CLUB CHAMPION 2007/8 Ian Cobb was declared club champion at the AGM, next years subscriptions were retained at the same level and three teams will be entered into next years MSCL with the departure of Alessandro Bonnano (to Italy) and David Fryer (to Crowborough/Uckfield). |
