This is a compilation of program notes mostly written for concerts I've produced at the Jacksonville Public Library, first as Intermezzo Sunday Concerts, and continuing now as Music @ Main programs.
The program selections are always chosen by the performers, and through the the Library I have been privileged to host many the First Coast's finest musicians, including members of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, as well as music faculty from both local and out-of-town colleges and universities.
The Library has no budget to hire musicians, but by sponsoring the concerts we have been able to waive the $1200 rental fee for our fine 400-seat Hicks Auditorium. We provide the musicians a first-rate, centrally-located hall free of charge, and at the same time provide the citizens of Jacksonville with first-rate cultural programs, also free.
Most of the following program notes are necessarily brief, intentionally limited to two or three pithy sentences so as to fit into the limited space of the printed program guides. The links in boldface typically lead to entries that are a little lengthier, sometimes combining notes about different pieces by the same composer that were performed on different concerts. (But only the entries for Mendelssohn and Ravel's Shéhérazade are actually article length.)
