Helping Them Deal with the Burdens of Capability
This session will raise awareness about social and emotional concerns associated with high ability. Whether achieving or not, whether interpersonally adept or not, and whether from mainstream or nonmainstream cultures, gifted children and adolescents are not exempt from stressful life events and certainly can be distressed about school and family, developmental transitions, and their own and others' expectations. Yet gifted individuals often are denied information about normal development and opportunities to discuss developmental and other personal challenges. Some are not seen as having social and emotional concerns at all. Dr. Peterson will share observations, insights, and strategies based on her work with gifted youth. She will describe characteristics that have been associated with giftedness, including some that represent the "dark side" of high ability.
