Saltveit Scholarship Application – Please make copies available to all interested persons. (note: the deadline for submitting applications for the Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship is March 1, 2009 so time is of the essence)
Letter regarding our youth camps – Please read at your next lodge meeting, post on a bulletin board and/or include in your newsletter.
Important Dates to Remember:
February 14 Youth camp registration forms must not be postmarked prior to this date.
March 1 Deadline for receiving applications for the Carl Saltveit Scholarship
for study at International Summer School.
Upon receipt Youth Camp Registrars mail campers confirmations and scholarship applications.
April 15 Deadline for receiving applications for the Sofie/Olson Scholarship.
April 30* Deadline for local lodges to notify me of the recipients’ names and the amounts
given so the campers are eligible to receive Draxten Memorial Scholarship
May 15 Deadline for local lodge scholarship checks to be received by Youth Camp
Registrars –
Please do not mail checks to campers!
May 31 Youth Camp Registrars mail final camper packets with statements
reflecting balance due after all scholarships are received.
June 12 Deadline for Youth Camp Registrars to receive full balance of fees

Sons of Norway District 2 Youth Camps
The 2009 summer camp season is now over, but the following gives you some idea of the 2010 events.

District 2 Sons of Norway puts on three, two-week long youth camps each summer. Check with your local District 2 Lodge for availability of a scholarship to support your camper.
2009 Camp Dates
Trollhaugen (13-15 year-olds) Easton, WA June 28 - July 11, 2009 (map or D2MAP)
Nidaros (9-12 year-olds) Gearhart, OR July 12 - 25, 2009 (map or D2MAP)
Normanna (9-12 year-olds) Lake Riley, WA (360) 403-8625 (or 360-445-5625) July 26 - August 8, 2009 (map or D2MAP driving directions ) and additional information is here.
From the 2009 Camper Application: - " Please enclose a $50 non-refundable deposit for each applicant. Total tuition for each two-week camp is $450. Balance is due by June 10, 2009. Applications must not be postmarked earlier than February 14, 2009, and will be recorded in the order in which they are received. To attend camp, children must have a parent or sponsor who is a Sons of Norway member in District 2." |

2009 The Sons of Norway Foundation
The Sons of Norway Foundation awards scholarships and grants to promote heritage and culture of Norway, and provide assistance to our members, lodges and their communities.
The following scholarships are offered by the Sons of Norway Foundation:
King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund
HRM, King Olav V of Norway allows the Sons of Norway Foundation to use his name in establishing a fund to promote cultural exchange between Norway and North America. The fund welcomes applications from Americans, 18 years or older.

Astrid G. Cates/Myrtle Beinhauer Fund
We invite applicants enrolling in post-secondary training or education including trade school, vocational school or college and must be current Sons of Norway members, children or grandchildren of current Sons of Norway members.

Nancy Lorraine Jensen Memorial Scholarship Fund
The fund encourages female American citizens between 17 and 35 to apply for financial assistance for programs in chemistry or physics, or in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering.

Scholarship to Oslo International Summer School
The Sons of Norway Foundation offers one scholarship each year for a student to attend the Oslo International Summer School. Visit The University of Oslo to learn more on the program.

Helen Tronvold Norwegian Folk High School Scholarship
The Sons of Norway Foundation Helen Tronvold Norwegian Folk High School Scholarship, established in 2005, supports the Sons of Norway Foundation’s goal of providing cross-cultural experiences for youth.

The Sofie/Olson Scholarships
The Sofie/Olson Scholarship is available for children who attend our District 2 Youth camps. One scholarship is awarded to an attendee at each of our camps: Nidaros, Normanna, and Trollhaugen. To be eligible, the camper must be children, grandchildren, nieces or nephew of a current District 2 member of Sons of Norway.

The camper must have applied and been accepted to the camp of their choice. A scholarship application with guidelines will be mailed to each camper. The deadline for scholarship application is April 15, 2009. |

2009 Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship
The Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship awards $2,800 to an applicant to attend the International Summer School (ISS) at the University of Oslo next summer. Additional information about the scholarship and an application form are enclosed. The completed application must be returned to me [Chris Hicks (425) 672-0194 hicks1015@msn.com] and postmarked no later than March 1, 2009. So time is approaching fast. |

College Scholarship Application due April 1, 2009
The opportunity to apply for Edmonds Sons of Norway Scholarship funding this year includes Unge Venner members in District 2, Zones 2 and 3, who are University or Community College students, as well as graduating high school seniors. Please disregard any forms you may have retained from previous years.

2009 Adult Cultural and Heritage Retreats
Who says kids should have all the fun! Get “hands on" your Heritage!
Learn Crafts - Language - Cooking - Woodcarving - Needlework - and much more!
Limited number of spaces, so register early.
Spring and Fall Adult Heritage Retreat September 25 - 27, 2009 at Trollhaugen Recreation Lodge [Application in DOC or PDF], and [Event Flyer in DOC or PDF]. Get MAP/directions here.
Price this year is $115 per person (if before September 1st, $125 if received later). All the regular classes and activites will be offered. If you are coming for the first time, you need to bring your own bedding and personal items. We begin Friday evening with dinner. You are welcome to bring a treat to share for coffee hour (and the recipe also, if it is homemade). There are a couple of activities after dinner. Classes start Saturday morning and continue through Sunday noon.

Note that our Edmonds Lodge gives a $50 scholarship to attend Trollhaugen Heritage Retreats! Application is available from Roberta, or at the meeting.
The Draxten Memorial Scholarship
The Draxten Memorial Scholarship is awarded to many of our children attending the District 2 youth camps. To be eligible, campers must have applied and been accepted to the camp of their choice AND they must have been awarded a camp scholarship from their local lodge.
The Draxten Memorial Fund will grant an amount up to, but not exceeding, the amount given by the local lodge. If your lodge does not have a large scholarship fund, please do not let that stop you from awarding what you can. Last year, lodge scholarships ranged from $50 - $100. The lodge awarding the initial scholarship must notify me of the recipient’s name and the amount given by April 30th, which means that lodges must select scholarships no later than April, Please let me [Chris Hicks (425) 672-0194 hicks1015@msn.com] know if you have not awarded them yet and when you will do so.*
From the Sons of Norway Foundation
We have added two new features to the foundation section of the Sons of Norway website. First, you are now able to see a complete listing of the 2008 grants awarded by individual grant category. Go to www.SonsOfNorway.com, click on foundation, then, click on grants to see Local Lodge Partnership Grants 2008 Grant Recipients, or General Heritage and Culture Grants 2008 Grant Recipients, or Helping Hands to Children Grant 2008 Grant Recipients. This feature has been available for the scholarship recipients for the past few years.
Secondly, the Foundation annual reports are now included on the foundation section as drop down choices. The 2008 annual report is now on the web to view.
