Known as "Syttende Mai", the streets of Ballard will come alive with music and celebration, all capped off with one of the area’s largest parades. 10am to 8pm: there will be children’s games and crafts, live music at Bergen Place in Ballard (map), a special luncheon, open house, two cafes, fjord horses to see and touch, and a PARADE! 10am-2pm: Kids games at Nordic Heritage Museum (map), 3014 NW 68th . Free admission to NHM all day; Nordic Café, food and beverages for sale all day, and fjord horses will be there. Noon-2pm: Luncheon at Leif Erikson Hall (map) at 2245 NW 57th in Ballard/Seattle. Tickets are $30.00; call 1-206-783-1274. 22nd Ave. NW and Market St., has on-going live, free entertainment. 2245 NW 57th St. in Ballard/Seattle from 3-5:00pm. Food, beverages, wine, beer will be available for purchase. Local Scandinavian organizations will have promotional material about their groups available. 6pm-8pm: PARADE!! We are pleased to announce an extended parade route this year! The parade starts at NW 62nd and 24th NW, goes south to Market Street, east to Bergen Place Park, turns down 22nd Ave NW, and continues south on Ballard Ave. NW, all the way to Dock Street! http://17thOfMay.org --- events Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with the 2:30 p.m. raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and hundreds of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries. Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expand to include contributions from all the Nordic and Baltic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees. Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere). Allspel time is 3:20 pm, immediately following the ceremonies at the pole. Friday - Sunday - August 17th - 19th Norsk Folkedans Stemne 2012 with Bjerkreimringen Bjerkreimringen has a wonderful program planned. Along with the group from Norway, local instructors, Peter Michaelsen (both a hardanger and flat fiddle player) and Rik Moseng (halling) will be teaching. Please bring your lur that has been standing in the corner of your room to stemne and learn how to play it! |
