Families  Advocating
for Students of Color

History  and  Purpose

In summer 2007, as a result of earlier community forums, several families, community members, and the group Families Advocating for Students of Color (FASC) came together with the Edmonds School District (ESD) to address the unique challenges impacting the educational experiences and academic performance of students of color in the district.

Over the years, these challenges have resulted in a documented achievement gap, a disproportionate number of disciplinary actions, and underrepresentation of  students of color in the most demanding academic programs. These challenges are not unique to the Edmonds School District, but exist across the country. We are all working together to identify the origin of these issues and to find ways to reverse their direction and foster the educational success of all children.

In addition, we have committed to bringing more diversity to the district through staff recruiting and training to ensure that all students have access to staff who bring culturally informed interactions to their educational experiences, and enable all students to see themselves reflected in our leaders and role models.

Through this work we hope to form a strong district-wide infrastructure that prepares and nurtures all students and celebrates the incredible community of diversity that is the Edmonds School District.
