Continuing on the light side of words, it is okay to use slang in your writing if it is used for a specific reason and is appropriate. For instance, characters in fiction many times do not use standard english and grammar, but if you were presenting a persuasive report, it may be inappropriate. Choose wisely!


There are many words or phrases that we use that are based on our history and culture. These are called idioms. English as a Second Language Learners (ESL) may find these confusing because they are not intended to be taken literally. The problem is that when they are presented, there is little indication that they are idioms, thus the confusion.
