Course Description

EDIT 2000 focuses on creating teaching and learning environments using technology. We will design products for learning environments through numerous activities with various technologies.

Purpose

To teach preservice teachers to use and manage technology in educational settings and to communicate means for using technology in educational settings.

Course Objectives                                                           

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop an exploratory, experimental approach to technology with a willingness to try new applications
  2. Define various types of learning styles and strategies and explain how technology can support the needs of diverse learners
  3. Operate available computer hardware and associated peripherals
  4. Evaluate resources for their potential for achieving instructional objectives
  5. Plan instruction that incorporates technology in appropriate ways
  6. Use technology as a personal productivity tool
  7. Recognize various implication for computer use in K-12 schools and other educational settings
  8. Reflect on literature related to using technology in educational settings
  9. Access, evaluate, and utilize online educational resources
  10. Explain and give concrete examples of how all the technologies learned in this class can be used to enhance instruction and personal productivity 
  11. Create learning activities and products with the following software that will enhance instruction and personal productivity:
      • Word processing software
      • Spreadsheet software
      • Presentation software
      • Web development software
      • Graphic design software
      • Graphic organizer software
      • Curriculum-specific software

Labs

Participants must comply with all lab procedures and policies as established by the University of Georgia.

Materials                                                                                                                                                                                                  

You need to have the following for this class:

  1. Textbook: Integrating Technology into Teaching: Technology & Learning Continuum (Paperback). Art Recesso (Author), Chandra Orrill (Author).Click here to buy it online.
  2. A USB storage device or key drive with at least 64Mb of storage.
  3. A backup location for EDIT 2000 files (You are required to back up class files on a home computer or with a CD backup at least once a week!)

Grading Policy

For this course, you will need to finish a series of projects. We will discuss in detail the requirements of various projects throughout this semester. There are several things that need your attention:< xml="true" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" prefix="o" namespace="">

  1. You will be given sufficient class time to get started on assignments and ask questions.
  2. Thus, Late work is not accepted! However, you will be given the opportunity to earn a "late pass" (meaning - it is due by the next class session) that may be used one time during the semester.
  3. You are welcome to submit your assignment ahead of time for formative feedback.
  4. You can resubmit your assignment within the 48 hours of its return if its grade is lower than 80%. But the highest grade for a resubmitted assignment is 80%.
  5. You need to budget enough time to finish all assignments and submit them on time. It is also likely you will need to work in a campus computer lab before or after class or on the weekend.
  6. 3 absences- no penalty; 4 absences - 10 pts off from final grade; 5 or more absences - WF

    A (4.00) = 93--100
    A- (3.70) = 90--92
    B+ (3.30) = 87--89
    B (3.00) = 84--86
    B- (2.70) = 80--83
    C+ (2.30) = 77--79
    C (2.00) = 74--76
    C- (1.70) = 70--73
    D (1.00) = 60--69
    F (0.00) = 0--59

Attendance Policy

Participation and attendance are worth 10% of your overall grade. However, 100% of your grade is affected when you do not attend class nor participate -- as it will be difficult, if not impossible, to catch up on missed work. To miss scheduled demonstrations or discussions seriously compromises your learning.

However, you are permitted to miss 3 classes during the semester without penalty. If you miss 4 classes, 10 points will be deducted from your final course grade. Missing more than 4 will result in a WF for this semester. I do not wish to be in the position of judging whether an absence should be excused or not. If you miss class, for any reason, you will be marked absent and it will count against your participation and attendance grade.

Attendance will be taken during the first 10 minutes of class via a sign-in sheet. You will be counted absent if you sign in for another student. You will be counted absent if you leave class early (unless the entire class is dismissed). The course instructor reserves the right to assign a penalty to the participation and attendance grade for excessive tardiness.
