 “A human being is a part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest ... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

A Vision of K-12 Students Today

Curriculum & Instruction

Mission

To work as a community to design and sustain a learning environment that promotes reflective inquiry, risk-taking, application, collaboration, evaluation, and opportunities for continuous growth and improvement.

Guiding Principles

Learning should be engaging, relevant, challenging, and prepare students for life and work in the 21st century;

Similarly, professional development should be engaging, relevant, challenging, and prepare us for education in the 21st century;

As a learning community, life long learning should be consistently modeled by all;

Continuous improvement is encouraged, nurtured, and sustained;

Instructional Improvement Plan

Curriculular Design will follow the Understanding by Design (UbD) model, using a backwards approach that identifies the goals and objectives as a precursor  and ultimately uses these as the building blocks in the design of the units, assessments, and activities that will be used to facilitate the learning and check understanding.

Goals -> Curriculum -> Units -> Lessons -> Assessments -> Activities

Technology will serve as an educational tool through which critical information seekers will learn, communicate, interact, gather information, contribute, achieve, and create "classrooms and schools without walls/boundaries."

Lesson Planning will focus on those tenets inherent in effective instructional design and delivery, including clear learning goals (Students will Know...Students will be able to...), Relevance, Quality of Assesments and Activities, and Reflective Inquiry.

Pre-Observation form will allow educators the opportunity to provide the evaluator with information about the "off-stage" variables found in Domain 1 and Domain 4 not always visible during the observation process, including but not limited to knowldege of student needs and participation in professional development or other related school activities.

Assessments should provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through the process of evaluation, synthesis, and analysis.  Whether formative or summative, these should also, when possible, be problem-based and authentic.

Individual Professional Development Plans will allow educators to formulate annual goals based on district/school goals, teaching assignments, evaluations, self-assessments and/or peer- assessments.  (For administrators, Professional Growth Plans will be used)

Professional Development opportunities will be continuous and encouraged in all aspects of teaching and learning, including faculty/departmental meetings, in-service workshops, collaborative projects, work with consultants, attendance at conferences, studies abroad, enrollment in college level course (on-site or online), etc.
