if we are powerful enough to cause global warming -- we are powerful enough to stop it.

I study climate change impacts on forests in the Appalachian Mountains.

I believe that these forests and other systems will respond remarkably over the next 50 years to the changes in atmospheric composition we have made through our use of fossil fuels and widespread removal of trees. I am deeply concerned that the rate of change might exceed the adaptive capacity of both wild and human systems.

But, I don't pass up on opportunities to enjoy myself while all this shiftiness is going down. I love hiking with my aging hound-dog, my husband, Doug, and our young son Ames. When I find time, I also play fiddle and mandolin in all kinds of roots styles, quilt, and practice yoga.

I also keep a blog about our vegetable garden.
