CALLS

Editions Bibliotekos plans to publish contemporary, creative prose works in collection format.  You are invited to submit to any of the following.  Deadlines are provided but somewhat flexible, depending upon the amount and quality of material we receive for any given title.

~ EB: Creating Literature for the Twenty-First Century ~

In all cases we are looking for relatively short creative prose (literary fiction or strong creative non-fiction) – up to approximately 2,000 words.  While this is a relative word count, we are decidedly less interested in long pieces.

No didactic editorializing, please.  We are looking for literary art, creative prose - words that transform personal experience into something deep and enduring for many other readers.  As such, an emphasis on exploring the human experience from a pose that is not self-involved is preferred.  Of course a writer’s ethos is a distinguishing mark, but get subtly to the reader’s feelings and emotions.  Do not exclude the reader by focusing too much on yourself.  Holding the reader’s attention from beginning to end is paramount to us in every instance.  Make each word count.

We are less interested in rambling narrative prose and more interested in tightly-compact, emotioanly/intellectually-challenging, highly imagistic writing (and thus the limitation on word count).  Good writing is a long process of re-writing and revision: send in finished work.

Please note that these Calls offer general themes – Collection Titles have not yet been determined and will become defined as each collection takes shape.  After each Call you will see some topics mentioned, but these are offered as guidelines only.

We intend to publish in English, so submit in that language only.  Submit your own, final work.

Should you have a question, please briefly query the publisher (with a clear Subject line) at: EBibliotekos@gmail.com    Thank you for your interest.

9/11 – 2011 and War and Peace (terror and terrorism): Memorializing 9/11; Witnessing, memory, and forgetting; Loss and renewal; Devastation, destruction, and monuments; Government action, inaction, intervention; Families; Heroics; Commentators, commentaries, politics.  Soldiering and soldiers’ stories; Spouses and families; Injury and recovery; Fatalities and memory; Killing; Friendship, alliance, allegiance; Loyalty and patriotism; Heroism, courage, cowardice.  We are looking for material that humanizes 9/11 ten years after; we are particularly interested in stories dealing with Afghanistan and Iraq (for both the soldiers serving in and civilians of those countries): write something that someone 50 years from now will read in order to understand our time.  Focus here only on 9/11 – there is a separate Call for War and a separate Call that treats race/ethnicity.  Deadline: 1 September 2010.

Nature’s World (the environment): Real/shaped worlds; Deep ecology; Animal/pet stories; Vegetarianism; Encounters with nature; Pollution in all its forms; Greening; Sustainability; Land and water; Country and urban environments.  While consciousness about global warming has been raised, what is the history of environmentalism, who is doing anything about it, and what is our human fate on this planet?  Deadline: 31 December 2011.

Faith and Doubt (god and religion): Faith in the twenty-first century; Churches, congregations, religious practices; Belief, disbelief, unbelief; Science and religion.  We are not interested in UFO writing or other forms of new age spiritualism – write about encounters with real people grappling with faith and issues of the soul.  Why am I alive?  Consider the rather vehement debates (still, after 150 years) storming around, e.g., Darwinism and evolution, creationism, intelligent design, religion as poison according to a contemporary scientist.  Deadline: 30 June 2011.

SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES:

All submissions must be prose fiction or creative non-fiction of no more than approximately 2,000 words, submitted as text pasted into an email to EBibliotekos@gmail.com   (This email is used for screening purposes; if we want your work, we will ask for a Word document later.)

Bibliotekos is happy to consider creative prose that has been published previously. Keep in mind, however, that if you submit something already published you must hold the copyright and have permission to re-publish; attribution to the original journal will be noted (and thus we'd need journal name and date of publication).  In most cases, authors hold rights to their work after it has been published in a small literary magazine/journal; you might not hold such rights if your work was published in a newspaper, large national journal, or a book.

There should be no pagination, no headers, no footers, and no images in your text.  Please make sure that your work has a title.

Note: Unless the subject line of the email reads: Bibliotekos Submission: [then name the particular Call], the email will be deleted unread.

In the text of your email preceding the submission, please include a biography of approximately 40 words (at most, no more please - if we accept your work you will have the chance for a slightly longer biography) and stable contact information (full name, street mailing address, etc.).

Editions Bibliotekos is a petit New York publisher, but we anticipate organizing readings from published material (though we cannot fund travel expenses) in the NYC metropolitan area.  Our goal is to print in book format voices that might not have been heard otherwise.  That's the best we can do, but we think it is enough.

TERMS: By the act of submitting work, the contributor agrees that, on acceptance, Editions Bibliotekos acquires one-time and non-exclusive anthology rights. That is, rights revert to the creator of the work upon publication, with the usual exceptions of: keeping the book in print; and an option to publish the work in a future electronic or (other) print anthology by Editions Bibliotekos.  A contributor may re-publish his or her work elsewhere, in the future (as long as some acknowledgement is given to EB – the usual courtesy).  In consideration for publishing your work, we will “pay” you with one copy of the published volume.  This is an implicit agreement.

FUTURE CALLS MIGHT FOCUS ON SUBJECTS SUCH AS:

Food; Sports; Crime – Keep Up-to-Date at http://ebibliotekos.blogspot.com/
