Massage & Tui Na

Massage, in Chinese called Tui Na, is another Chinese contribution to world medicine. It is a form of physiotherapy commonly used in TCM, with a history dating back over 2000 years.  It is integral to the theory of promoting the flow of qi through the meridians. The words Tui Na translated from Chinese into English mean "poke-pinch" or "push-grasp".

Tuina treatments use massage, acupressure and manipulation techniques together with external herbal poultices, compresses, liniments and salves.

The practitioner may roll, brush, knead, press and rub the areas between each of the joints (known as the eight gates in TCM) to open the body's defensive (wei) qi and get the energy moving in both the meridians and the muscles, the ultimate aim being to regulate the function of internal organs, harmonise the circulation of qi and blood, and assist the body to heal itself naturally.

Tuina treatments usually last from 30 minutes to 1 hour.  The patient, wearing loose clothes and without shoes, lies either on a treatment couch or on a mat on the floor.  Massage and manipulation of the soft tissue may involve pressure from just a single finger to many other techniques involving the practitioners hands and arms.

Tuina differs from many forms of Chinese medicine that have a more holistic approach., since it tends to focus on the problem more specifically. It is effective for many conditions: it can be used to treat children and elderly patients, and is recommended for those who dislike acupuncture needles.

Apart from the medical benefits, patients usually find it deeply relaxing. The simplicity and focus of Tui Na upon specific problems, rather than a more generalized treatment, makes it both an excellent alternative and extension of Swedish-style massage.

Combination with other Treatments

Depending upon the patient's condition and the treatment being administered, it is not uncommon for Massage to be combined with Cupping within a course of treatment. However, the practitioner will discuss this fully with the patient before any treatment commences.
