Recycling

    Paper Retrievers

AbitibiBowater’s Paper Retriever Program loans green and yellow dumpsters – free of charge – to non-profit organizations.  The churches, colleges, K-12 schools, libraries, and other agencies place the dumpsters in their parking lots and then encourage the community to bring old newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, and other paper products to the dumpsters to recycle.  When the dumpsters are full, an AbitibiBowater representative picks up the paper – also free of charge – and then pays the non-profit on a per-ton basis.  AbitibiBowater likes to emphasize the enormous fundraising potential of this FREE service!

NOTE: As the largest North American supplier of newsprint, AbitibiBowater filed for Chapter
11 bankruptcy in March of 2009.
Best to inquire about future payments from this company before agreeing to house
            dumpsters on your campus!

    RecycleMania

RecycleMania is an annual competition among U.S. colleges and universities with
established recycling programs.  Over a ten-week period, the participating schools
submit recycling and trash statistics which are then ranked according to the largest amount
of recycling per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash
per capita, and/or the highest recycling rate.  In 2009, more than 500 schools collectively
recycled or composted 69.4 million pounds of waste in a mere ten weeks.  If your
college or university doesn't compete in RecycleMania, encourage your administration to join!
