For a Class
For your next library instruction session, try offering a specialized web site in place of a paper
handout. Over 700 libraries already subscribe to LibGuides, a relatively cheap content
management system that allows you to create and customize subject guides for
specific courses. The possibilities are endless! Embed catalog search boxes, database links,
and videos. Insert RSS feeds from relevant journals and newspapers. Tag each LibGuide and
then promote it on Twitter!
BONUS: Since most libraries don't restrict access to their LibGuides, you can glean lots of
ideas from your colleagues at other colleges by browsing their collections on the LibGuides
Community Site: http://www.libguides.com. No membership necessary to take a peek!
For a Community
If members of your college community are interested in green living and sustainability, create a
site that highlights your library's eco-friendly resources. The San Francisco Public Library
recently launched Green Stacks, "the community resource for living a greener
life": http://sfpl.lib.ca.us/green/. The site includes book and movie recommendations, interviews
with local "green people", and a calendar of upcoming events.
If you'd prefer to work with a free web site tool, don't forget about Google Sites! No HTML
knowledge is required for LibGuides or Google Sites.
