Opening the batting for East Torrens Under 16 Red team in their one day match against Glenelg, Luke scored 94 and was dismissed with his team’s score on 199. East Torrens ended their allotted 40 overs at 6/208, a score that the Seahorses were unable to chase down.
Luke, who joined East Torrens in the Under 14’s in 2006/07, was unlucky not to be named the 'Powerade Junior Player of the Match' in round one after scoring his maiden century for the Reds against Tea Tree Gully.
Luke is automatically included in the Powerade Junior Team of the Year and will be awarded a 'Powerade Junior Cricketer of the Round' pack at the East Torrens District Cricket Club over the next couple of weeks.
Luke will also be invited to attend a function at the Adelaide Oval at the end of the season, acknowledging him, along with other nominees throughout the year, for his outstanding performance over the season.
Dougall makes final Australian Under 19 World Cup squad!
The Cricket Australia Youth Selection Panel (YSP) today announced the final 15-player squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup to be held in New Zealand in January 2010. Congratulations to Ben Dougall!
The Australia Under-19 World Cup squad is:
Mitchell Marsh - Western Australia - CAPTAIN
Timothy Armstrong - New South Wales
Tom Beaton - Western Australia
Nicholas Buchanan - Queensland
Jackson Coleman - Victoria
Luke Doran - New South Wales
Benjamin Dougall - South Australia
Jason Floros - Queensland
Josh Hazlewood - New South Wales
Alexander Keath - Victoria
Nicolas Maddinson - New South Wales
Alister McDermott - Queensland
Kane Richardson - South Australia
Thomas Triffitt - Tasmania
Adam Zampa - New South Wales
Commenting on the squad, YSP Chairman Greg Chappell said; “I think we’ve got a side that will acquit itself well in the competition. Obviously we’ve got a couple of players that have played state cricket this season which stands them in good stead for the competition we’re up against in New Zealand.
“The YSP has been monitoring players closely and attended the recent Under-19 National Championships to get a good look at a group of players we’ve had our eye on.
“I think we’ve got a side that’s pretty well balanced; we’ve got some good batting, some good pace bowling and a couple of good young spinners and they’re all they’re all pretty good fielders.
“The fact that the tournament is being played in New Zealand probably helps us a little bit in terms of providing similar wickets to that of Australia and the strong sub-continent teams maybe slightly disadvantaged by that.
“The subcontinent teams are always very strong and have some great young talent and if we were playing them in their own conditions I think it would be a very difficult challenge.
“There’s no doubt that those nations will be our biggest threats; they were strong at the last Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008 and they always have a good pool of young talent. Although the conditions may not be quite as they would like in New Zealand, I think they will provide a big challenge for our team, as we saw earlier in the year when India came out here.
“I would expect that we’ll get through to the semi-finals, I’d be very disappointed if we didn’t make it that far and if you get a bit of luck once you make it there, then anything can happen. I’m confident we’ll acquit ourselves pretty well.
The ICC Under-19 World will be held in New Zealand from 15 – 30 January 2010. Australia is seeded sixth and sits in Group B with South Africa, Ireland and USA.
Australia Under-19’s first match is against the USA in Queenstown on 16 January. They then play Ireland the following day before finishing the group stage against South Africa on 20 January.

Hayden Mullins named Powerade Junior Cricketer of the Round!
Red’s captain Hayden lost the toss and was required to field in their Under 14 Red match against Tea Tree Gully at Banksia Park Primary School. However, the game swung into the favour of East Torrens swiftly as the Bulls were dismissed for 80 runs; Hayden breaking a 45 run partnership to close Tea Tree Gully’s innings. He finished with figures of 1/1 from 1 over and took the only two catches of the innings.
In the run chase, Hayden came to the crease at 1/28 before sharing a 164 run partnership to ensure the Red’s securing first innings points. Declaring at 3/240, Hayden finished his innings unbeaten on 130, his first century for the club. His innings consisted of twenty 4’s and two 6’s. Eventually the game completed with Tea Tree Gully at 2/75.
As a result of his performance, Hayden has automatically been selected in the Powerade Junior Team of the Year and will be awarded a 'Powerade Junior Cricketer of the Round' pack at East Torrens over the next couple of weeks. He will also be invited to attend a function at the Adelaide Oval at the end of the season, acknowledging him, along with other nominees throughout the year, of their outstanding performances over the season.
East Torrens debutant, Luke Pickford has been nominated as the Grade Cricket Rising Star for Round 1.
The nineteen year old right hand medium fast bowler was the stand out performer for East Torrens, taking 4 for 65 in the Reds’ opening grade fixture against Glenelg. Not satisfied with this performance, Pickford took a further 3 wickets in the first round of the XXXX Gold One Day Cup Competition the following weekend.
Pickford commenced his career with East Torrens in the Ray Sutton Shield in 2002/03 and has progressed through every grade for the Reds. Thirty nine lower senior grade wickets (B, C and D Grade) in 2007/08 coupled with a further 24 wickets at an average of 16.8 in the B Grade last season appears to have provided Pickford with a strong platform for success in 2009/10.
Commencing in season 2006/07, the Grade Cricket Rising Star Award was introduced to acknowledge the outstanding performances of some of the young players within our Grade Cricket Competition. Each round, a player under the age of 23, having played less than 20 A Grade matches (including XXXX Gold One Day matches) is selected as the Grade Cricket Rising Star for that Round. From these nominations, a Grade Cricket Rising Star of the Year is selected. This player will be awarded the Jason Gillespie Medal at the Bradman Medal Presentation on Wednesday 24 March 2010.
We congratulate Luke Pickford on his selection as the Grade Cricket Rising Star for Round 1.
Aaron Mullins named 2009 Bradman Scholar!

Aaron, an all-rounder who bowls orthodox left-arm spin, is currently a member of the Australian Under 18 Talent squad. He hopes to represent South Australia at the U19 State Championships in December, after which he’ll find out if he has been selected to represent Australia at the U19 World Cup in New Zealand in 2010. He is currently in his second semester studying commerce at the University of Adelaide and continues to play grade cricket for East Torrens, the side he has represented since the age of 12.
Throughout his scholarship, Aaron will serve as an ambassador for the Bradman Foundation, assisting its work around Australia. An important part of this will be to raise awareness of the International Cricket Hall of Fame, which is to be built in Bowral next to the Bradman Oval.
Aaron Mullins said, “I am extremely honoured to have been awarded the Bradman 99.94 Scholarship. I have always dreamed of representing my country at the highest possible level, but I also enjoy my studies and hope to have a successful career in business, too. The Scholarship gives me a great opportunity to try to achieve both those ambitions. I will represent the Bradman Foundation with great pride and will do my best to uphold the beliefs of Sir Donald.”
“The Bradman Scholarship is a great way of giving a young cricketer the best possible start to his or her playing career,” said Simon Katich. “Cricket is an unpredictable profession – we’re reliant on maintaining top form and staying fit – so having a good education to fall back on is invaluable. Aaron is very lucky to have the backing of the Bradman Foundation at this stage in his life.”
Rina Hore, Executive Director of the Bradman Foundation, said, “When we award the Bradman Scholarship, we are looking to reward a young person who possesses a blend of academic, sporting, personal and social skills, together with a strong talent on the cricket field. Aaron has proved himself to be both an exceptional cricketer and a dedicated student, as well as having the desired personal attributes. He exemplifies what Sir Donald Bradman stood for, and is a very worthy recipient of the 2009/10 Bradman 99.94 Scholarship.”
About the Bradman 99.94 Scholarship
The Bradman 99.94 Scholarship was first awarded in 1991 and takes its name from the batting average of Sir Donald Bradman. The recipient is chosen by a panel including the former Prime Minister and Bradman Foundation board member the Honourable John Howard AC; Ian Craig, the former captain of Australia; Curator of the Bradman Museum, David Wells; and Rina Hore.
Ben Dougall in Australian U/19 team to face Sri Lanka
Cricket Australia’s Youth Selection Panel (YSP) today announced a 14-man squad to play Sri Lanka in five one-day matches in early October. The five-match series will provide the YSP with another opportunity to look at Australia’s up-and-coming talent ahead of the ICC Under-19 World Cup to be held in New Zealand from 16 – 31 January 2010.

Tom Beaton WA
Tom Brinsley SA

Matthew Dixon WA
Luke Doran NSW
Ben Dougall SA
Jason Floros QLD
Alex Keath VIC
Nic Maddinson NSW
Mitchell Marsh WA
Sam Whiteman WA
Adam Zampa NSWCommenting on the squad, YSP Chairman Greg Chappell, said: “We currently have a preliminary Under-19 World Cup squad of 31 players and we have obviously selected this squad with the intention of having another look at players ahead of the Cup next year. We had a good look at a group of players in the series against India Under-19 in April and this series against Sri Lanka provides another chance to look at players ahead of the World Cup. We still have a few months before the Cup and we will be keeping a close eye on players in the lead-up, but this series against Sri Lanka will be the last international series for the squad before going to New Zealand. The World Cup is rapidly approaching and this is a great chance for players to really put their hand up against quality international opposition.”
CA Centre of Excellence (COE) Program Manager Brian McFadyen will be the team’s coach, with COE batting coach David Fitzgerald his assistant. The YSP will announce Australia’s Under-19 ICC World Cup squad in December.

Dougall in the news again!
In further outstanding news for Ben Dougall, he has been included in a 31-man preliminary Australian squad for the 2010 ICC Under 19 World Cup.
The Cricket Australia National Youth Selection Panel - comprising Chairman Geoff Tamblyn, Ray Bright, Brian McFadyen and National Selection Panel (NSP) Chairman Andrew Hilditch - have selected the squads following the Cricket Australia National Underage Championships and subsequent talent camps and Grade Cricket performances.
Commenting on the preliminary squad for the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup, NYSP Chair Geoff Tamblyn said: "Following the Cricket Australia National Under-17 and Under-19 Championships, recent talent camps at the Centre of Excellence and also taking into consideration the premier grade performances of each player, the Youth Selection Panel have selected a preliminary squad of 31 players for the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup. This group is an exceptionally talented squad who will further develop over next 12 months. I'm sure all the players are looking forward to honing their skills and being part of this preliminary squad.
Congratulations to Ben and we look forward to him cementing his place in the final squad over the coming 12 months.
