Red Oil
by Edward Alan Bartholomew
Oil on canvas, coal on slate, Scaffolds steel a hotel wedge. A palace on a crooked state, A dynasty backed to an edge Steam on sapphire, brick on fog, Shutters stare the daylight down. Fortunes float on off-white smog; The laity in liquor drowns Mold on meat, hot maggot soup, Burning muscle in every arm, Boiling spleen in every troop; Hearken to the red alarm! Rest your crooked scythe and spade, Let your hammer fall no more! O, comrade, join this red parade! Take up thy sword in civil war! Based on the painting "Coal Factories" (1930) by Yuri Amenkov, which also inspires Soviet Tanka IX & X |
