FEMA Opens Disaster Recovery Center in Dyer County Updated May 16 The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has declared a disaster in Dyer County, meaning that individuals may now apply for assistance. Residents whose homes have been lost or damaged in the flooding will need to register with FEMA for assistance either by calling 800-621-3362 (800-621-FEMA), by visiting disasterassistance.gov, or by registering through a web enabled mobile device at m.fema.gov. Persons MUST be registered to become eligible for federal money. This money may include low-interest loans for homeowners from the Small Business Administration. EVERYONE AFFECTED BY THE FLOOD SHOULD REGISTER WITH FEMA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, even if you are unsure if you are eligible for aid. FEMA has now established a Disaster Recovery Center at the Dyersburg Mall. Persons will be able to visit directly with FEMA representatives to discuss their situation. IMPORTANT: You MUST register with FEMA before visiting the Center. The Center will be open Monday-Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm on Sunday from noon to 6 pm. While flood waters continue to recede, we can expect waters to be present in some areas for days -- even weeks -- to come. As part of their process, FEMA will need to be able to access your property to determine the level of damage before they can determine what assistance they will be able to offer. Please be patient as this process takes place. In addition to registering with FEMA residents are also invited to register with DRS (see next section) so DRS can provide further help. DRS will also be present at the Dyersburg Mall to discuss how affected residents can recover and rebuild. UPDATED ON MAY 16, 2011 There is a distribution center at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyersburg (at the corner of Parr and the 51 Bypass) for those affected by any flooding who need personal hygiene items (such as shampoo, toothbrushes, diapers, and toilet paper) and non-perishable food items. The center is open Monday-Friday from 3-6 pm. The Red Cross has closed the shelter that had been open in Dyer County. If you need assistance from the Red Cross, please call them at 731-286-4740. If you experience flooding and need assistance: Please register with DRS by calling 731-285-3303 or by sending us an email at recovery@dyerdisaster.org. If you call or email, please give us your name, the address where you experienced loss, and phone numbers where we can reach you. Once the Disaster Center is open at the Dyersburg Mall, you will also be able to register in person with one of our volunteers. As soon as possible, a volunteer case worker will contact you so we can begin helping you rebuild your life. As the scope of the disaster becomes clearer, this page will have additional information on other opportunities for you to help those in need. DRS will coordinate the services of volunteers and professionals as our community moves forward in the weeks and months to come. It is our goal to match the needs of our clients with the ability of our providers, making it easier for those in need -- and those with something to share -- to find each other. You can also help by making a donation to DRS. All donations received by DRS do directly to the victims; no administrative fee is deducted. For more information on how you can help by your donation, please see the "Donate Today" box in the sidebar on the left side of this page. You may also donate online by clicking the "Donate" button below. Your donation will be processed by PayPal, a secure process which accepts major credit cards. Thank you! Please note: PayPal will deduct a small fee; all other proceeds from your on-line donation will be used 100% to support the victims of disaster in Dyer County. Who is DRS? Disaster Recovery Services (DRS) is a volunteer group which provides Recovery Services in the event of a disaster affecting the residents of Dyer County, Tennessee. We do so by coordinating the work of governmental authorities, non-profit organizations, businesses, and caring individuals to meet the needs of persons in Dyer County affected by disaster. We are a United Way Partner operating under the authority of the YMCA of Dyer County. There are some good materials at the Shelby County Emergency Preparedness site which discuss how to be prepared for a number of emergency situations. |
