Welcome to my “Team in Training” page. I completed a marathon, 26.2 miles or 42.2 km, in support of patient services of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Washington/Alaska Chapter. Below are some general details about the program.
What are some specific examples of Team in Training's support of patient services?
Dr Brian Druker and his team's research at Oregon Health & Science University has resulted in the drug Gleevec that is a targeted treatment for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). Some patients now just require taking a tablet daily instead of radiotherapy and bone marrow transplants.
Team in Training’s donations also are used for example to pay for flights for Alaskan leukemia patients to Seattle where they have access to specialized oncology units.
Did you complete the marathon?
Yes, I completed the Portland Marathon on October 6, 2002, Bib 5001. Here is my race day photo.
For whom were you running?
- In loving memory of my father, Hans Gerhard Wolfram (1920-1996); BCE (Melbourne); FIEAust; F.ASCE; FIE (Malaysia); FIGEM; FIStructE; M.IABSE; MICE; Director of Engineering, West Gate Bridge Authority (1971-1979).
- for the families of Ken Green (deceased 2002); and Richard Warren Koves (deceased). I also wrote their names on my singlet.
for the well-being of three Washington Honor Patients: Meghan Smith, 3 years old of Bainbridge Island, pictured below; Jamie Heying, 16, of Lynnwood, and Andrew Schorr, 51, of Mercer Island
- for patients with blood-related cancers anywhere.
Who were your sponsors?
I raised US$2233.20 from several generous sponsors some of whom have provided matching donations. To participate in the Portland Marathon, I needed to raise US$2,200.
