Site Description

The Pioneer Fen-Dutch Creek Conservation Area in Johnsburg, Illinois consists of wetlands, prairie, and oak savanna. Second generation oak trees stand along the former prairie-savanna transition area on both the east and west borders.  Small pockets of native sedge meadow and hillside fen communities exist, although much of the site has been overrun by invasive plants.

A creek near the west border runs north-to-south and is sourced from 3 springs.  The creek drains into the west-to-east primary branch of Dutch Creek, ultimately flowing into the Fox River.  The US Army Corps of Engineers has designated the creek as a high-quality headwaters for the Fox River.

The area is a mixture of privately and publicly owned lands protected by conservation easements under the management of the McHenry County Conservation District and The Land Conservancy of McHenry County.
