Welcome

The Dutch Creek Volunteers are people of all ages and backgrounds from across McHenry County, Illinois who have a passion for protecting and restoring native midwest landscapes.

The team's mission is to restore the Pioneer Fen - Dutch Creek Conservation Area in the town of Johnsburg to as healthy a native ecological state as feasible.

The team's vision is to create a blended landscape that compliments the residential use of the surrounding lands today, while restoring some of the splendor of the past.

The restoration effort commenced in January 2008 and consists of three basic activities:
  1. Removal of invasive plant species.
  2. Re-introduction of native plant species.
  3. Facilitation of prescribed burns to combat invasives and encourage native plant growth.

If you'd like to be added to the distribution list for updates, please send an email to Robert Roe.

Why restore the land?

Restoration of conserved lands generates ecological, economic, health, and aesthetic benefits for the community.  Through restoration, the Dutch Creek area can achieve a state of managed balance between the surrounding residential properties and the natural ecological processes of the midwest landscape.
