DUSTY WOBBLS CAN MADE ICE BUTT ACHIVMENT TRUE FOR YOUR

AFFECTING MATTERS TO ICE BUTT ACHIVMENT ROUTE AND TIMETABLE IN GENERAL

ICE BUTT was taken place in February because it was only month of the year when Finish riders haven’t ridden IBA IRON BUTT achievements. That was also the reason where name SS1000 ICE BUTT is coming from.

SS1000 ICE BUTT route must go trough of Arctic Circle sign in Rovaniemi that’s the same sign where Finish biker Jone Krigsholm visit 15 Jan 2001 on his legendary SS1000 winter ride Helsinki – Artic Circle – Helsinki.

  1. The annual Helsinki MOTO SHOW was call of and was reformed to take place in Lahti Fair Center 5 – 7 Feb 2010 should ICE BUTT achievement star and finish point be there. 2010 is also IBA Finland’s 10th year’s anniversary and we like to give testimonial to IBA FINLAND. The MOTO Show’s busiest day will be Sat 6 Feb and that will give the ICE BUTT achievement maximal media coverage when we gone arrange finish being back noon 6 Feb. So we arrange media rendezvous to 5 Feb front of the MOTO Show and we should be back 6 Feb noon and prime time. So we can make gorgeous entrance on the stage and ride straight in to MOTO Show. When we came they open the doors to us and we rode straight inside the hall center of the crowd. It was really impressive entrance.
  2. Two bikes have also GPS Traking system onboard and you were able to follow up the riding online on the IBA Finland stage in MOTO Show and also three of the bikes were on view after the ICE BUTT achivment.
  3. So opening hours of the MOTO Show actually dictates commencing and finishing times of the ICE BUTT achievement in any way they aren’t the best ones if thinking just riding because we were in Arctic Circle at middle of the night and we were also in Lapland at coldest hours’ of the day.

THINGS TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION ON ROUTE PLANING ICE BUTT

  1. Normal SS1000 rules will followed
  2. Try to do in group if it possible
  3. Route should be as fast and simple as possible for navigate
  4. All gas stations must be open when you arrive
  5. Brakes number out side of required corner points receipt breaks should be minimized because 24 hour limit will become really tight in this riding achievement. Bear in mind that in Finland in winter time speed limits are 100 km/h (62 ml/h) on highways and 80 km/h (50 ml/h) on general out side of population centres.
  6. Route calculated by official routing program:
  7. Lahti - Varkaus – Kuopio – Kajaani – Kemijärvi – Rovaniemi (Arctic

Circle) - Kemi - Pyhäjärvi - Äänekoski - Heinola – Lahti when calculating fastest mode (bona fide riding distance) gives 1664 km (1034 mil) and mode shortest (official controlled distance) 1650 km (1025 ml) required that receipt for every stop has been collected. Distance of the route compare the SS1000 requirements sounds bit to long so there was plan B what allow to move finishing point to Heinola when official controlled distance was 1614 km (1003 ml) so every extra mile has been chop off.

In riders meeting to 4 Feb riders decide that they will move finishing to Heinola and follow plan B. Be a consequence of  plan B ICE BUTT group will do transit to Lahti MOTO Show trough less dense traffic main road 140. During this transit stage we also give TV-crew good possibility to made moving footage and things they like to cover for document they are making. Lahti downtown was totally jammed and that’s why route was planed to ways less dens traffic. We manage arrive to MOTO Show in time with out problems thanks’ for the hosts. It was difficult for riders to integrate to city traffic with pedestrians and traffic lights after 1000 miles of Finish winter roads, snow ice and darkness and try to avoid last minute misadventure.

  1. Route include total 214 km (133 ml) of highway in six different parts so continuous highway parts where only some ten miles at the time. There where parts with two lanes and overtaking lanes what made overtaking trucks possible. In ICE BUTT group include also two low power bikes Honda 125 Varadero and Kawasaki KLX 250 S and they didn’t had power reserve to do quick overtaking. All mentioned above means that route should be follow roads with less dense traffic. That was the key part to follow as good as we can but you can’t put the rout to too small roads where driving speed can fall down and road can be covered with deep snow.
  2. Stage distances I try to keep 210 km-260 km (130 ml-161ml) if the considering of corner points it’s possible and bear in mind that every body have enough fuel for every stage. So timetable for the riders every body was informed if he is filling up or only buy candy bar for the receipt. I believe that riders can make the most of on day light by minimizing the breaks  and when arrive to Arctic Circle there will be 30 min break for TV-crew interviews and footages.
  3. Way back from Arctic Circle trough E75 from Kemi to Jyväskylä 440 km (273 ml) is quite straight that you can’t do any short cuts and that was longest stage on the route Kemi-Pyhäjärvi 256 km (159 ml) what was definitely really challenging after over 1000 km (621 ml) under belt on long dark and cold hours’ of icy and snow ground! I think that if its necessary riders will do unplanned break just on road side. Maybe route plan could include one more break but time limit is so tight that official controlled time there was only 20 min left on finish.
  4. Something about rider’s attitude tells that fact that safety and TV-crew who driving behind riders with MB-Sprinter was hardly following the riders. On route there were also parts that other vehicles were driving way under the speed limit and slow down riders’. NB above mentioned safety / TV-crew and MB-Sprinter was only in safety purpose if some one must drop out they can collect the bike and rider before he cone be frozen totally. All what riders cone use during ICE BUTT they must carry with.
  5. Because in this ICE BUTT achievement what was also performance and testimonial there will be extra mileages should our accommodation be near of the official starting point and MOTO Show and we did some 50 km (31 ml) of extra out side of official distance.
  6. Like we all IRON BUTTs well know that when planning the route we always are forced to do some compromise but must keep the totality clear in mind. Even the best route plan is only a plan and riders should be able to react if plan must be changed when on the road even at short notice.

CONCLUSION

SS1000 ICE BUTT is remarkably demanding riding achievement and requires that rider have experience of riding the bike in winter conditions snow and ice covered grounds in absolutely darkness for hundreds of mileages and when temperature is way under 0°C ( 32 F).

Maybe we Finnish bikers are bit “addict” nation but I think that I’m not wrong if I say that in next winter will see even more demanding riding achievements’ the limit is set.

Nevertheless in next summer there will be hundreds more of accepted riding achievements’.
