The Durham Literacy Center is a member-supported organization. Without the help of our members, we would not be able to do the work that we do to empower Durham County residents through literacy.

Donate by Check
Prefer to do things offline? Checks are always welcome here at the DLC. Just make your check out to the Durham Literacy Center and send it to this address: Durham Literacy Center, PO Box 52209, Durham, NC 27707.In return, we will share the gift of literacy across Durham and send you a thank you letter, both to express our gratitude and for your tax deductions.
Year-end Tax Deductions, Retirement Accounts, and Gift Planning
Donations to the Durham Literacy Center are tax-deductible. We will mail you a Thank You letter documenting your donation and our non-profit status. If you have retirement accounts and are over the age of 59 1/2, you may be entitled to additional benefits (e.g., reduction in income or estate taxes) when taking a deduction for your gifts to the DLC. The end of the year is an opportunity for you to take advantage of such tax benefits. To maximize your benefits, please consult your tax advisor or financial institution. We hope you'll consider a gift to the Durham Literacy Center.
Support DLC with a Charitable IRA Rollover
Recent legislation renews a temporary provision that allows donors age 70 1/2 or older to make a direct, tax-free rollover of up to $100,000 from a traditional or Roth IRA to a qualified charitable organization such as the Durham Literacy Center—but only in 2008 or 2009. A direct rollover will be much better for most donors than a taxable IRA withdrawal followed by a charitable gift. Of course, only donors who are sure they will not need these assets at a later date should consider a charitable IRA rollover. Donors of any age can still make a deferred gift of an IRA or other retirement account by naming the Durham Literacy Center as a beneficiary of the account at their death.

We also have an account with GoodSearch, an Internet search engine that promotes charitable giving. You use GoodSearch exactly as you would any other search engine. Because it's powered by Yahoo!, you get proven search results. The money GoodSearch donates to the DLC comes from its advertisers — you do not have to spend a dime! Just go to www.goodsearch.com and enter Durham Literacy Center where it says "Who do you GoodSearch for?" Hit enter, and then begin searching the Internet. It's that easy!
Computer Donations
The Durham Literacy Center typically does not accept computer-related donations. However, we are in the process of replacing many of our outdated desktop computers, and we are looking for new desktops and laptops running Windows software (XP Professional or Vista Business). We are also looking to replace our CRT monitors with flat panel monitors. If you can contribute any of these items, please contact us at rebecca@durhamliteracy.org.
If you have older used computers that you would like to donate, we recommend contacting the Triangle United Way Teaming for Technology program or the Kramden Institute Inc. to see if they can accept your donation.
