What We Do
Since 1985, the Durham Literacy Center has empowered more than 12,000 Durham County residents who have enriched their lives by:
- Improving their reading and writing skills
- Improving their knowledge of English
- Earning a GED diploma
- Learning to use computers to find and/or maintain employment
Our Impact
On May 9, 2012, the DLC's Teen Career Academy was awarded the Durham System of Care High School Award at the Making a Difference for Durham Families Awards Breakfast. The TCA provides motivated Durham youth with an opportunity to earn a GED diploma while learning valuable career skills and giving back to the larger Durham community through community service projects. This spring, our TCA students have pledged to spend 300 hours at 3 Habitat for Humanity sites, building permanent homes for Durham families. One of the new home owners benefiting from their hard work is a DLC ESOL student, Lal Thang Mawi, who is originally from Myanmar (Burma)! Check back for more information and photos.
