OUTREACH AND EVANGELISM COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF 15 APRIL MEETING
Meeting Time: 7:00 p.m. Medina
Beth showed the committee the magnets, pens, and new brochure that she purchased to be put in the welcome bags for guests. The church website has also been revised and there is now a section for the Outreach and Evangelism Committee to post information. Pastor Whang also wants to have coffee mugs with the church logo available by membership Sunday, 31 May, for the new members. There is a possibility of 5 new families for membership. Beth has researched several places online for the mugs and the information will be turned over to Nancy Bliss to research further and place the order. It was reported that the gift bags are going well but more baked goods are needed. It was decided that an announcement would be made in church for individuals who have missing nametags. Nancy can make these in the office.
The Community Outreach Program’s Funeral Planning Seminar is progressing. Press releases will be placed in the Volunteer for the week of 20 and 27 April, a copy sent to Nancy for emailing to other media outlets, and posters distributed around town. George handles this.
Laurie had two concerns. The Unbirthday Party for Media. There is a need for more materials such as pens/paper, socks, T-shirts, scarves, jewelry, stamps, and haircut certificates. Donations will be accepted at the church until 25 April and the unbirthday gifts distributed sometime at a later date. It was decided that all Median residents should receive these gifts. Also, Laurie was concerned about the trash along Durand road. She would like to see it cleaned up but is not sure who, if anyone, is responsible for roadside pickup along Durand road. She will inquire as to whom is responsible. The Durand UMC is responsible for Rt 70 from Kinneys to Rt 75.
Beth stated that cards, envelopes, and pens have been put out in the community room for individuals to fill out for the homebound. Everyone is encouraged to fill out a card.
Pastor Whang mentioned that Bert S still would like the Church to pickup kids at Otter Creek. The committee still feels that this is not a good idea. A discussion was held about buying a bus and/or van or using private transportation. It was decided that the number of kids needing rides should be known. No action taken.
Next Meeting: 20 May, 7:00 p.m. at the Church. The O&E committee will be meeting with the new membership class.
Adjourned: 8:15p.m.

- have the ushers distribute the gift bags to visitors
(items included in the bags were bread, monthly newsletter, church broucher,
pens and magnets (which are on order
- the nametags need to be updated and new ones made
- visitor nametags need to be reworded to read “Guest” instead of visitor
The Build Them Up survey was also discussed. This deals with after the worship.
Several of the points discussed were:
- fellowship
- calling the “guests” within a 24hr period after worship
- suggestions
- do a Saturday evening community worship service with several of the local UMC
- Reinstate/Revive Fun/Food/Fellowship
Community Outreach Programs were discussed. It was suggested that programs be developed on a quarterly basis. Such programs as funeral planning, caring for the elderly, financial planning etc. could be presented. The first program is scheduled for 2 May with a possible alternate day of 30 May. This will be a Funeral Planning Seminar presented by Brian McCorkle. The suggested start time will be 1130. Topics will include: discussion of paperwork needed, placing funeral desires on paper, prepaying and other interesting facts, and a Q and A period. Light refreshments will be served afterward.
A discussion was also held about better organizing the Meals for Shut-ins and Meals for Moms. If anyone is interested in doing this or preparing meals, notify the Outreach and Evangelism Committee.
A discussion was also held about white or brown bags. I’m not sure how this turned out.
The Homebound List was also updated. Evelyn Choate was added. It was also decided to set up a “Thinking of You” card station in the community room. These cards could be filled out while individuals were waiting in fellowship line.
Other: Bert S would like to see some kind of arrangement made by the church to pickup kids who live at Otter Creek and want to come to church. Most committee members felt this was not a good idea because of the liability issues it presented. No action was taken.
