Del's Research and final copy for his Newspaper/Bookcover Projects in GDS 108
This webpage will be utilized to summarize how I eventually completed our Newspaper Add assignment for GSC 108 at Parkland College.
Research for Inspiration
The assignment began in mid-September by doing research in the Parkland College Library. The illustration I found to be most inspiring came from and issue of Print magazine. The add was for Reptile's House and the piece was entitle "Fill Me Up Baby".
Original Design from The News-Gazette
The original add I was to redesign appeared in the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette the first week in October. The copy was taken from a travel agency called Suzi Davis Travel. The following picture was scanned from the Gazette and enlarged for your viewing pleasure.
Included Concept Sketches
I've included a couple of sketches from my sketch book that will give you an idea of the preliminary design process I went through to make my first proof.
Preliminary B&W Proof
This is my first attempt at making an add from the sketches I attempted to draw in my sketch book. I received permission from Tim Davis, owner of Suzi Davis Travel, to copy some of his images from the Suzi Davis website. I told Tim I would give him a copy of my final add at the completion of this project.
Final Redesign of Newspaper Project
Research for Inspiration for Book Cover
I received an inspiration for this bookcover from one of the sketches we had available to use from Paul's informative PowerPoint presentation on Color Theory.
Book Cover Selected for Redesign
The book I selected for redesign is entitled High Hopes by Gary Barnett. The book talks about how the Northwestern football program came from the depths of dispair to eventually reach elite status. The team was rewarded for its efforts with a trip to Pasadena and a birth in the famed Rose Bowl game.
Redesigned Book Cover
My final redesign was completed using Photoshop. I used several layers in this program to establish different colors of purple. The look I was trying to achieve was realized using various sizes of Garamond font.
