Dr. Tracy Cohn, Licensed Clinical PsychologistYou're not alone. Even when the world feels heavy and dark you're not alone. When you struggle to leave your house because of anxiety and nerves, you're not alone. When you believe that you're facing a break-up, a divorce, or a major life change (including stopping drinking or drug use), you're not alone. As a licensed psychologist, I work to help people make changes in their life. Change is not easy and it takes time and guidance. Sometimes guidance can be provided through the assistance of a psychologist who may help you understand alternatives and consequences of change. Psychologists may also be able to help you develop a plan to implement change in your life. If you're contemplating making changes in your life, consider scheduling an appointment [540.674.4506].
My Training and Approach to Therapy: I have a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology earned from the University of Kansas. I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia. My areas of training include gender issues in general, and specifically working with survivors of trauma, abuse, and victimization, and people in recovery from alcohol and drugs. Additionally, my experience as a faculty member makes me well suited in working with individuals in higher education. My approach is called integrative with an emphasis on psychodynamic theory. This is an approach that is tailored toward the needs of each client. However, emphasis is placed on early relationship experiences and how these patterns are continued in our adult life. I use a variety of techniques in therapy to find what will work best for each client. These techniques include dialogue, interpretation, cognitive reframing, awareness exercises, self-monitoring experiments, visualization, journal-keeping, drawing, and reading books. If I propose a specific technique that may have special risks attached, I will inform you of that, and discuss with you the risks and benefits of what I am suggesting. I may suggest that you consult with a physical health care provider regarding somatic treatments that could help your problems. I may suggest that you get involved in a therapy or support group as part of your work with me. If another health care person is working with you, I will need a release of information from you so that I can communicate freely with that person about your care. In addition to my work as a practicing psychologist, I am an Assistant Professor at Radford University. If you are currently a student at Radford University and may be taking classes in the Department of Psychology, please make me aware of this early on in our work so that we can discuss potential concerns or issues that may be unique to this relationship.
