What
is ORTHOTROPICS?
Orthotropics is the
science of guiding the growth of the face, from the Greek 'orthos' meaning
correct and 'tropis' meaning growth. This compares with 'Orthodontics' which
means straightening the teeth, and 'Dental Orthopedics' which means moving the
jaws. (excerpt from Dr. John Mew's Website)
What
is different about Biobloc Treatment?
It is believed that
malocclusion (the relationship between the jaws and the teeth) is entirely
environmental, and caused mainly by eating soft food and having an open-mouthed
posture. Newborn babies naturally keep their mouth closed, but in industrialized
countries most young children develop open mouthed postures and subsequently
have irregular teeth and jaws. Biobloc appliances are used to train children to
keep their mouths closed while they are still young, with the primary objective
of correcting the growth of the face, thus, reducing the likelihood of
malocclusion developing.
Once we have eliminated
genetics as being the cause of facial and dental problems, we must look at other
causes such as tongue posture and oral habits. We examine the patient's tongue
resting posture, swallowing patterns and oral habits; there is only one correct
resting posture and swallowing technique.
Myotherapy is defined
as follow; Involves retraining and conditioning muscles to eliminate
dysfunctional swallowing patterns and tongue habits. Used as a supporting
therapy in orthotropics treatment, TMJ therapy and myofascial pain syndrome.

After
the reason for the patient's lack of space to accommodate all the teeth has been
established, we begin treatment. |
