Orthotropics

What is ORTHOTROPICS?
Orthotropics is the science of guiding the growth of the face, from the Greek 'orthos' meaning correct and 'tropis' meaning growth. This compares with 'Orthodontics' which means straightening the teeth, and 'Dental Orthopedics' which means moving the jaws. (excerpt from Dr. John Mew's Website)

 Orthodontics Orthotropics
It is believed that you inherited your small (large) Jaw and large (small) teeth from your parents. Doubtful; conflicting evidence and no explanation for why out direct ancestors of 25, 000 years ago who shared almost exactly the same genes had almost no jaw size/relationship problems. (Sykes 2001)
uses appliances to move teeth in "ideal" position within the confines of the jaw, extracting teeth when necessary.uses appliances to widen the jaw to make enough space for all the teeth, extractions are avoided in most cases.
if the jaws are in the wrong posistion they may be sectioned surgically into a more suitable position uses appliances to widen and reposition jaws, surgery is not considered.
Patients are treated in there teens, after the jaws have formed and the teeth are all grown.     [patients are treated at a young age preferably between 3 to 8 years old to prevent unfavorable growth of the jaw, teeth, and face from developing.
dental irregularities tend to return within 10 years  dental irregularities tend not to return, if the patient retains proper oral habits learned in myotherapy.

What is different about Biobloc Treatment?
It is believed that malocclusion (the relationship between the jaws and the teeth) is entirely environmental, and caused mainly by eating soft food and having an open-mouthed posture. Newborn babies naturally keep their mouth closed, but in industrialized countries most young children develop open mouthed postures and subsequently have irregular teeth and jaws. Biobloc appliances are used to train children to keep their mouths closed while they are still young, with the primary objective of correcting the growth of the face, thus, reducing the likelihood of malocclusion developing.

Once we have eliminated genetics as being the cause of facial and dental problems, we must look at other causes such as tongue posture and oral habits. We examine the patient's tongue resting posture, swallowing patterns and oral habits; there is only one correct resting posture and swallowing technique.

Myotherapy is defined as follow; Involves retraining and conditioning muscles to eliminate dysfunctional swallowing patterns and tongue habits. Used as a supporting therapy in orthotropics treatment, TMJ therapy and myofascial pain syndrome.  (to find out more about myotherapy click here)

After the reason for the patient's lack of space to accommodate all the teeth has been established, we begin treatment.
