the expansion of the upper jaw with a removable appliance. This appliance is
fabricated of acrylic and wires with a screw located in the center of the
appliance which is turned 1/8 mm every night. This is to help and guide the
growth of the jaw so that a patient may reclaim some of what nature intended
him/her to have. There are 2 lower stage 1 appliances one without a screw
(upper right) and one with a screw.Stage
II:
once
the jaws have been expanded to accommodate all the teeth a stage II is often
introduced and the Stage I lower without a screw. This appliance is not as bulky
as the stage I and its function is to help retain the expansion. Myotherapy
exercises are introduced to teach the patient proper swallowing and resting
techniques. These techniques will ensure the patient's success in long-term
retention. This stage may sometimes by unnecessary. Stages
III or IV: is
a posturing appliance, which helps the lower jaw to come forward and keeps the
patient's mouth closed. The myotherapy is continued during this stag e, as well
as after all appliances are removed. (The difference between Stage III and IV
is in reference to which molars the appliance is anchored on as well as the
stage III most often has a Hoffman wire).** appliances are a courtesy of A&J Laboratories (780)439-1454 - Tom McBride |
