I work on many geologic maps in Nevada and parts of adjacent states.
There is no better way for me to understand geology then by trying to map it. Focusing on ideal sections in small, possibly widely
spaced areas is deceivingly illuminating until you understand and
consider the larger context of small outcrops. Funding cycles and, in particular,
performance expectations at NBMG combine to force me to work on more
maps than are feasible to formally publish (i.e. following peer review
in office and field) on a regular schedule. The following is an
incomplete list of ongoing or recently completed mapping projects on
which I am involved. For a boring (and locally redundant) list of my
unpublished maps (the hall of shame) follow this link.
Currently, I am mapping in the middle Owyhee River area in SE Oregon, the Bill Williams River area in western Arizona, the lower Walker River in western Nevada, a small part of the Carson Desert near Fallon, Nevada, areas along the lower Colorado River in southern Nevada, and the surficial geology of the entirety of Clark County Nevada at 1:100,000. The latter comprises Phase 1 of the Nevada Digital Dirt Mapping Project.

Non-reviewed maps
| Maps that have not gone through a formal review process are provided as
open-file maps by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. In all cases
these are very roughly complete maps and represent significant effort
put forth, but they do need additional work to be formally published
and for me to receive any notable credit for them (quite the dilemma,
no?). Since about 2004, I have compiled all of my maps using ArcGIS. As
noted above, I tend to work on too many maps at one time, so this
category is bloated. Working on de-bloating it while still vying for
promotion at NBMG. |
