In addition to participating in the trip to Santo Domingo during Maymester, students will be required to sign up for TSTM 590D for Maymester 2009 and will do the following in preparation for the trip:
- Meet 3-4 times prior to the trip. We will identify convenient times for all program participants. The purpose of these meetings will be to orient students to the project, explain the culture of the Dominican Republic and poverty alleviation efforts, discuss effective methods for promoting fundraising for the orphanage, and get to know one another.
- Read one book about poverty alleviation or culture in the Dominican Republic. Provide a short report.
- Develop and make one presentation before a non-student group (your instructor will be happy to help facilitate this) about the goals of the trip and reasons for contributing to the orphanage.
- Develop an online format (i.e., website, blog, email) for promoting the orphanage.
