MANONMANIAM SUNDARANAR UNIVERSITY (MSU) was established in 1990, as per the Act 31 of 1990 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, as a Teaching-cum-affiliating university,

The University is named after the Tamil poet literate/Prof. P. Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897), the renowned writer of late 19th century. Who is the author of famous verse drama MANONMANIAM. 

The university caters to the needs of three southern districts of TamilNadu, namely, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. Dr. M. Karunanithi, the then Chief Minister of TamilNadu on 7th September 1990, formally inaugurated the University. It is recognized by the University grants Commission and accredited by NAAC.   

About Eighty thousand students are studying in the Various University Departments and the Eighty affiliated colleges. MSU is one of the pioneering institutions that offers Choice-Based Credit System(CBCS).

The University Departments offer M.Phil. and Ph.d Programmes.(Full time and Part time) in addition to regular Masters Programmes.
