Profile

I'm a post-doctoral researcher working at the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science in Sydney, Australia. In my research, I'm interested in the cognitive and neural mechanisms involved in a range of developmental disorders.

In my PhD at Warwick University, I looked at the relationship between language and memory abilities in individuals with Williams syndrome. I looked at similar issues in Down syndrome in a subsequent post-doctoral position at Bristol Uni with Chris Jarrold.

Over the years, I've collaborated in a number of studies looking at various aspects of autism, including visual perception, language and social attention. I'm particularly interested in how the various symptoms associated with autism may relate to differences in brain connectivity.

In my previous job, I worked with Kate Nation and Courtenay Norbury at Oxford University. We developed a new way of investigating language comprehension in children with autism which involved tracking their eye-movements while they listened to sentences.

I'm currently working with Blake Johnson and Genevieve McArthur on a 5-year project funded by the Australian Research Council. Our aim is to link cognitive and neural-level mechanisms of language impairment in autism. We will be adopting a range of methodological approaches including eye-tracking, and magnetoencephalography (MEG).

I'm also supervising two PhD students. Tommy Ng is investigating the neural basis of motor coordination in adults with and without autism. Shu Yau is looking at auditory processing in autism and language impairment. My first student, Ellie Wilson has just completed her PhD, looking at face-recognition skills in children with autism and developmental prosopagnosia.

When I get a few moments, I write a blog on current developments in autism research. I also maintain the Autism Research Australasia website.
