Carbon Shoe
Carbon Shoe
I found this broken carbon shoe from the top of a trolley pole laying on the ground at Atlantic base. This shoe is what actually makes contact with the wire - when they are damaged, it's very easy for the poles to dewire. (NOT fun to drive, I assure you) Atlantic base has markings on the ground that allow us to park the buses so a scissor lift can be driven between the buses. A mechanic can inspect the shoes and replace them as necessary without having to get back on the ground. I don't know how often the shoes are replaced but they are checked on a regular basis.

Changing the trolley, here being lowered and positioned under the hook on the roof of the tram was standard procedure at the times when tram were fitted with trolleys. Also note the ticket sachel on the conductres' shoulder. In the meantime the passenger on the left boards the tram somewhat clumsy.
