Emma Hamilton, BSc., MSc., Certified Level 2 Coach

Emma began riding at the age of 8 at the University of Toronto Riding School, which was only a five minute walk from her home. She had the fortune to meet and train with British coach, Patrick Hendley, who instilled in her a solid foundation of riding skills and stable management. By the age on 10 Emma was competing in the local hunter/jumper circuit winning classes and championships and then went on to successfully compete A-circuit in her teens. By the age of 15, Emma was an assistant coach and weekend manager at the riding facility.

When the school closed down in 1986, Emma moved her horse to a new facility where she meet German coach Henrik Strauss. It was here she was introduced to the wonderful discipline of classical dressage. Training with Heinrich for 4-years, Emma was able to develop her own horse up to the Prix St. George Level and assist with the starting and training of young horses that were part of the farms Hanoverian breeding program. In addition to going to University full-time and training her horse, Emma took on other jobs to expand her experience with horses. These jobs ranged from exercising young Thoroughbreds destined for the race track to working at a large breeding facility in Ontario assisting with the handling of stallions, broodmares and foals.

In 1990 Emma`s horse sustained a hock injury which resulted in his retirement so she decided to put her energies into finishing her Bachelor of Science degree in biology and psychology at the University of Toronto. Her interest in research lead to the completion of a Master`s of Science degree in the Department of Pathology at the University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College. Here she assisted in necropsies and learned the intricacies of equine anatomy and physiology. After finishing her education, Emma stayed on at the veterinary college working part-time in research and continued to expand her knowledge of animal health and welfare. At the same time, she returned to horses to teach and train which lead to the decision to obtain her coach certification.

Currently, Emma is a certified Level 2 coach and has successfully completed components of her Level 3. She actively teaches students from basic to advanced levels in dressage at the regional and national levels. Her students enjoy much success in the show ring and win, riding a variety of different breeds, due to their gained knowledge of correct classical dressage training.

In the past, Emma has trained and taken clinics with top Canadian, American and German coaches but for the last few years has consistently trained with Canadian Olympic rider and Level 3 coach, Belinda Trussell of Stouville Ontario. For the past several years, Belinda has been a regular clinician at PEMMbrook farms.
