What does a Psychologist do and what can you expect from therapy?

The work is mainly to encourage the client to talk and explore their feelings, beliefs, thoughts and often, their childhood. As the therapist pays attention to the stories or reports of events that a client shares, the focus is not only on the report but also on the lively signals that indicate underlying material of which the client may not be aware — how the client is experiencing him/herself in his/her world in the present moment. It is a process which seeks to help the person gain an increased capacity for choice, through which the individual becomes more autonomous and self actualizing.
