The Laser class of boat really needs little in the way of introduction. Since its inception in 1969, it has become the most popular boat ever made and has sold worldwide by the tens of thousand.
The Laser comes in three forms which are:
Laser 4.7: As the name suggests, this rig is 4.7m2 and is thus quite managable for juniors, lighter sailors and beginners
Laser Radial: This is the Women's Olympic class single hander, and comes with a 5.76m2 sail area.
Laser: This is the original Laser boat, one of two men's Olympic single handed boats, with a sail area of 7.06m2
The differences between the three boats is in the rig. The different sail areas need different height masts to support them. The three types of boats have identical components except for the lower mast section (the mast splits into two sections). This makes the boat very versitile since it is possible to 'grow' with the boat as you increase your stature and experience.
Most boats at Draycote are sailed with the standard rig although some of the fleet will race with a radial rig when the going gets tough!
More information on the boat can be found at the manufacturers website, which contains this brochure http://www.laserperformance.com/main/images/stories/pdfs/Laser/Laser_Brochure.pdf |
