YAWNOGARD ~ the novel
by John H. Long
In the beginning there was a planet located in the Draco star system that was ruled by a crystal entity older than the Universe. As a sentient being, this crystal and others of her kind were relegated to serve on water planets throughout the known universe. One such entity known as the Mother Perecry became the protector and keeper of all that Yawnogard came to be. She bore the task of helping the planet and all that lived upon it to survive and multiply. Her task, like her sisters on other water planets, was to insure that all living things would live to their fullest before moving on. After billions of years of evolution on the planet Yawnogard, the Pangia continent of Nucopia slowly began to break apart and become a source for life of a variety unlike that of Earth. This planet held creatures of immense sizes and shapes. One such creature was the dragon. Here, dragons flew in flocks like the birds of Earth. Once the dragon's evolution was far enough advanced, a human type of being was introduced to Nucopia. Again, after a billion years had passed, this human being developed mental abilities far surpassing those of Earth's man in all respects. One such being, known to us as Merlin, fell into the line of succession in the hierarchy of the ruling class on the planet, but he had a more specific calling when he learned that disaster was going to befall Yawnogard. | His task, given to him by the Mother Perecry was to save as many wizards, wives, children and sentient dragons as possible.
With the help of the Mother Perecry and other sentient crystals on other water planets, Merlin traversed the Universe for the next 20,000 years searching for a place for his companions.Twelve thousand years ago, Merlin found Earth to be a comparable planet, land and vegetation wise, and made many trips from Yawnogard to Earth checking on the Earth human's growth. Approximately 2,000 years before disaster struck Yawnogard in the form of an errant chunk of a previously destroyed planet from a distant star system, Merlin, his family and hundreds of other wizards and their families along with dragons of all shapes and sizes, were transported in a crystalline way to Earth. Once here Merlin and his followers tried to blend in with the humans. Unfortunately, the humans of Earth were extremely hostile and suspicious of all newcomers, especially those that spoke, acted or dressed differently. Even though Merlin had visited Earth many times and had made contact with the beings, he held them in great regard and remained wary of their aggressive tendencies. Later, when his dragons and fellow travelers were beset upon by the hostile inhabitants, Merlin placed his remaining dragons in hiding on the planet in places inaccessible to the hostile hordes. Many of his companions and their dragons opted to leave Earth to find refuge on other water planets. | Over the next 1800 years, Merlin kept his family and others away from the hostile masses. Before the turn of the 21st Century, Merlin's son married and his wife bore him three children, two boys and an infant girl. A few months after the birth of his daughter, Merlin's son was killed in a train accident. While at the funeral, which was attended by hundreds of co-workers, family and friends, only Merlin stood far and away from the crowd, watching as the new Heritage of Yawnogard was emerging.
