Douglas M. Franz

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the International Baccalaureate Programme at Palm Harbor University High School in 2009 and began my undergraduate coursework at the University of South Florida in fall of 2009. I am currently a second-year student with Junior classification status working to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science & Policy.

I was born in Seminole, FL in 1991 but have traveled to the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Honduras, and other places in the United States. My future goals are to acquire a Masters of Science degree in Public Health (MSPH) in 2013 and perhaps later a Ph. D. in Chemistry and to ultimately do international work on water purification and supply in developing nations. I am a USF Honors College student and a Discovery Research Scholar who hopes to study abroad in Central or Southern America and/or Israel during my undergraduate career. I am conversationally fluent in Spanish but would like to sharpen my communicative skills in these regions.

I've been active in undergraduate research at USF in the department of Chemistry since February of 2010 and I'm currently working on my first scientific journal publication regarding removal of nuisance anions in water using a silica-based compound called Octolig under the guidance of Dr. Dean Martin. I'm also working on a research project based on the rural village of Cusuna, Honduras to find potential solutions to the problems of infant mortality and child underdevelopment as a result of poor water quality.

I currently work as an SAT Course Teacher with The Princeton Review, and I appreciate the opportunity to work there. I love to teach. In my spare time, I enjoy playing disc golf, kayaking, and biking with my close friends, and practicing the martial art Kuroshi Kai Kan. Beginning at age 12, I pursued the knowledge of music and have learned to play the electric, acoustic and bass guitars, piano, drums, and most recently the ukulele. I have written some works of poetry as well as songs in tabbed notation with and without lyrics, primarily on the guitar.
