For the most part, Doomed Again plays just like vanilla Doom. Here are most of the differences worth mentioning: You may find pictures illustrating some of these changes in the media section. GAMEPLAY:- No multiplayer support. Yeah, I know, but Doomed Again is and will stay single player only.
- Key items are now completely different.
- Swimmable water/slime/lava/blood. Water and blood do not damage the player (but don't forget you have to breathe).
- New special sectors : airless, low gravity.
- Level design is different from Doom. More information here.
- Night vision goggles are not a powerup item. They can be toggled on/off at will but require some time to recharge.
- The player can now throw flares. Flares are unlimited but only one can be thrown every ten seconds.
ENEMIES: (more information here)
- No more monster infighting. Monsters from different species can still hurt one another when caught in a crossfire, but won't turn against their attacker.
- The following monsters have been removed : arachnotron, pain elemental, spider mastermind, icon of sin (Romero's head)
- New monster : Baphomet (an imp on steroids with an ability to teleport).
- New monster : Vagary (inspired from the Doom 3 monster). Replaces the arachnotron.
- Modified monster : Spectre. Now is completely invisible unless attacking and drains player's health. HP decreased for balance.
- Modified monster : Heavy Weapon Dude. Uses an assault rifle instead of a chaingun. See "weapons and ammo" section below.
- Modified monster : The Hell Knight is really different now : nothing of value was lost as the
vanilla hell knight was just a nerfed baron. Now behaves somehow like Hexen's slaughtaur.
- Modified monsters : Baron of Hell and Cyberdemon. Now have 60% resistance against bullets/melee weapons.
- New boss monster : Lord of the Abyss. A beefed up baron of hell.
- New boss monster : Behemoth. Thought the cyberdemon was bad news? Think again.
- New boss monster : Beelzebub. Final boss. The father of all bad guys.
HUD:- The number of seconds remaining for each active powerup is shown on screen.
- Powerups now have a visible effect on the game screen (berserk blurs your view, goggles and environmental suit are visible...)
ITEMS AND POWERUPS: (more information here) - The following items have been removed : armor bonus, health bonus, megasphere.
- New item : Blood vial (+5% health, up to 200%).
- New item : Jetpack (allows the player to fly for a short duration).
- Modified item : Green armor now gives 25% protection, 50% armor (used to be 33%, 100%).
- Modified item : Blue armor now gives 50% protection, 100% armor (used to be 50%, 200%).
- New item : Yellow amor - 66% protection, 150% armor.
- New item : Red amor - 75% protection, 200% armor, 60% extra protection against melee attacks.
- Modified item : Radiation shielding suit now provides air in addition to sector damage protection.
- Modified item : Berserk pack. Doesn't provide any healing on pickup but a the player will slowly regenerate while under the effect of the berserk pack.
- All armors now decay much more slowly (they only suffer 40% of inflicted damage).
WEAPONS AND AMMO: (more information here) - "Bullets" ammo type has been split in "pistol rounds" and "rifle
rounds", the former being used by the pistol (and the dual pistols),
the latter by the assault rifle and chaingun.
- Carrying capacity changed :
- Default is : 100 pistol rounds, 50 shells, 200 rifle rounds, 50 rockets, 300 cells, 150 unholy crystals
- Bandolier increases this to : 200 pistol rounds, 100 shells, 400 rifle rounds
- Backpack increases this to : 100 rockets, 6000 cells, 300 unholy crystals
- New ammo type : Unholy crystals. Used by the unholy apparatus.
- New weapon : Dual pistols. You get a second pistol when you kill a former human.
- New weapon : Assault rifle. Behaves like the chaingun in vanilla Doom.
- New weapon : Unholy apparatus. At last, a weapon from hell in Doom's arsenal. Primary attack drains enemy health, secondary attacks lays toxic balls of gas.
- Modified item : Backpack. Now only increase carrying capacity for rockets, cells and unholy crystals.
- New item : Bandolier. Increase carrying capacity for pistol rounds, shells and rifle rounds.
- Modified weapon : Super shotgun. Default attack shoots only one shell. Secondary attack (see below) still discharges both barrels at once, just like in vanilla Doom.
- Modified weapon : Chaingun. Now behaves like Quake 2's chaingun.
- Some weapons (super shotgun, assault rifle, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, unholy apparatus) now have a secondary attack.
