The Way Back is Forward (An age group triathlete's journey with cancer)

Stand Up to Cancer

My name is Bill Manning and I am a 4 year prostate cancer patient and survivor (click on the my story page for details).

Once I understood that I had an aggressive form of advanced prostate cancer and that I would be living with cancer for the rest of my life (or until a cure is found), I decided to begin a personal journey to stand up to my cancer.  It is not about me or the individual events, but it is my way of making a statement that this disease will never defeat me. I want to share this journey with other cancer survivors and use it as a platform to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

I have participated in triathlons for 25 consecutive years including the last 4 years of various cancer treatments (surgery, radiation, chemo and hormone therapy).  Triathlons have been very helpful to me in dealing with my cancer.  At the bottom of this page you can click on the photo gallery to see pictures from some races.

I am dedicated to try my best to raise awareness for cancer and especially for prostate cancer.  More importantly I want to help fellow cancer patients and survivors.  My hope is that my efforts in these events will help other to understand what is possible with and after cancer.

Last year we raised over $12,000 for LAF.  Thank you to all my supporters.  At the bottom of the page click on past events to see about last years' event.

This year event is the Timberman Triathlon.  A 1/2 ironman triathlon consisting of a 1.2 mile swim followed by a 56 mile bike ride followed by a 13.1 mile run.

The event is held up in Gilford, NH on August 23, 2009.  If you can please donate to LAF by clicking on the LiveStrong banner.

Over the next several years I will do my best to participate in events and raise money for the fight against cancer.  At the bottom of the page click on the future events page to see my plans.

If you can please donate.  If you know someone you may benefit from hearing my story please pass on this link to them.
