Teaching your puppy not to jump can be done many different ways. It is an important lesson for any puppy or grown dog to learn. Most people don't want to walk into a house and have some four legged licking machine jumping all over them. It is also very important when little children come over because they could easily get injured by your dog.
Some important rules to keep in mind are to let friends or family let the dog jump up on them to be greeted. Tell them politely that you don't want your dog jumping on anybody even if their alright with it. Don't allow your dog to jump on some people and not others as this will only confuse them.
Another way is when your dog jumps lean into him as he jumps. This doesn't work with all dogs and be careful if you do this to a fearful or shy dog as this can easily scare them.
If your dog only likes to jump on people when they enter your home try leaving a basket of his chew toys outside the front door. When a person comes over have them bring one of the toys in with them and when your dog is ready to jump have them toss the toy. Have them repeat this 2 to 3 times until your dog is being petted while never jumping.
A great training game you can try is the greeting game. Use about 6 feet of leash for this exercise. Step on the dogs leash and have a friend or family member approach your dog. Have them start to pet the dog if the dog jumps have them walk a couple feet away. When your dog has all four paws on the ground repeat this step but this time cue your dog to sit first. Pet the dog until he jumps again. Keep repeating these steps and before you know it you will have a dog that will not jump on people any more. |
