Reflection:
The opportunity to be a leader in my building helped me realize just how excited I am about the opportunities graduate school will give me as I continue on my journey as a technology leader. Implementing the use of iPads by training the staff in how to use them for their professional use as well as with their students, provided opportunities that brought all the competency skills I have developed to fruition. Throughout the internship project I believe I have met all the competencies as reflected below:
- Adopt a reflective-practice stance to your work: Throughout the internship, I have reflected on the needs of the learners as well as the latest research and ideas about implementing iPads.
- Conduct a needs assessment for learning or performance interventions: Before and during this process I assessed the needs of the staff and developed interventions such as after school study groups for those that were new to using iPads. I also designed my training agendas based on their learning needs and goals.
- Applying theory and best practices, conduct an analysis of learners, content and context for instruction, and design activities and experiences for learning: The iPad rubric and surveys were designed using the best practices in mind and I was able to use them to design activities to meet the needs of learners.
- Accommodate the needs of diverse learners through media and technology: The web site I designed accommodates the needs of my learners by giving them alternative resources in addition to the face to face meetings. There are videos, readings and exemplars for the staff to reference.
- Use tools and apply message-design principles to develop products and resources to support learning and performance: The web site I designed applies many of the design principles and supports the staff in their iPad use growth.
- Implement and evaluate effectiveness of programs, products, or practices: The survey that I administered before and during the implementation program allowed me to evaluate the effectiveness of the trainings and web site support.
- Assess student/participant learning: Without assessing the staff throughout the process, I would not have known what the needs were during each training nor what needs could be addressed through the on-line web site support.
- Utilize research methods to investigate a learning, organizational, or performance problem: The first thing I did when I started my internship was to research what best practice and research had been documented on the use of iPads in elementary schools.
- Manage a development or related project: I managed the implementation of the iPads for our building through organizing the tech side and the staff development piece of the project.
- Participate in a change process and provide leadership in helping people adopt new technologies or practices: As the leader of the “BRE Putting iPads to Work for You” internship project helped my staff adopt the new iPad technology and begin using it effectively with their students.
