Anatomy for Life Drawing

Knowing artistic anatomy does not mean simply knowing a list of names, it means being able to visualize any part of the body, in any action, from any direction. This ability not only opens up the possibility of drawing from the imagination, it is also used continuously in drawing from life. Naturally it helps with drawing details, but even more so it helps with quick poses, enabling you to grasp the action in one line instead of twenty. For beginning anatomists we will focus on the skeleton first, but content is flexible for those with prior knowledge.
A five-day workshop at the National Art School, Sydney. 10 am - 4.30 pm daily, $AUS 655/590 with earlybird discount/concession available (see NAS website for details) .

  • Monday - Friday 2nd-6th July 2012

Oil Painting with Colour and Light

Learn to see past the bewildering details of your subject to gather the exact colour information you need to get your painting off to a great start! Discover how to think of colour in a way that enables you to mix the exact colour that you want confidently and directly, every time. This course in modern colour theory and its application to oil painting focuses on understanding how light and colour actually work, avoiding the confusion caused by colour myths. The approach has given great results with both beginning and advanced students.
Twelve Tuesday evenings at the National Art School, Sydney, 6-9 pm. AUS $800/$720 with "Earlybird"/concession discount (see NAS website for details).
  •  Tuesday evenings, 17 July - 16 October 2012

Theories of Colour

T
his new course of lectures, practical demonstrations and exercises will trace the history of both "artistic" and "scientific" colour theory, looking at the evolution of our answers to fundamental questions like what are colours "made of", what is the relationship between colour and light, and what are the influences on colour perception. Examine facsimiles and scarce historical editions of the original writings of Newton, Goethe, Chevreul, Rood, Ostwald, Albers and dozens of others, and experience many of their key observations and experiments on colour recreated in class. This theory course complements the more practically oriented courses "Oil Painting with Colour and Light" (NAS) and "Colour, Light and Vision" (JAAS). Especially recommended for teachers of colour at any level.
Six Thursday evenings at the National Art School, Sydney, 6-9 pm: 19 July - 23 August 2012. AUS $400/$360 with "Earlybird"/concession discount (see NAS website for details).
  •  Thursday evenings, 19 July - 23 August 2012

JULIAN ASHTON ART SCHOOL, SYDNEY

IMPORTANT NOTE: Several students notified me recently of some confusing advice they were given when trying to register for a holiday workshop at the Julian Ashton Art School. I have made a committment to the School to be available for all of the workshop dates listed below, but the classes can only run if enough students have enrolled with payment of a deposit or in full, well before the workshop dates. If you wish to attend one of these workshops, but are informed by Ashton's that the course "may not be running", it is  important that you:
1, politely insist on enrolling anyway (you will not be charged until the course is confirmed),
2, politely decline any offer to only "take your name and let you know if the class does run",
and 3, inform me directly of your interest in attending, as I may be able to round up a few more enrollments in time to prevent unnecessary cancellation of the workshop.

Additionally, if you are told that your chosen workshop has been definitely cancelled, and you would like to attend it at a later date, it would be a very good idea to immediately register your interest with me, to help with point 3 above.
