Jack-o'-Clock (Martha Stewart living) Introduction Cinderella pumpkins are bright orange and somewhat squat. Choose one with a clean, flat base, which will serve as the clock's face. The design is carved with a linoleum cutter, which removes only the outer flesh. Step 1 To Prepare Pumpkin Size clock-face template as needed to fit pumpkin, with the center of clock face aligned over the center of base. Print, and trim excess paper around template. Step 2 To Prepare Pumpkin Cut a hole around pumpkin stem, large enough to fit glass jar, with keyhole saw. Step 3 To Prepare Pumpkin Clean the inside of pumpkin with fleshing tool, removing seeds, pulp, and fibers. Step 4 To Prepare Pumpkin Affix clock-face template to pumpkin's base with masking tape. Using awl, transfer designs to pumpkin by poking holes around blackened areas and numbers. Remove template. Step 5 To Carve Face With linoleum cutter fitted with a No. 2 blade, carve numbers and face, exposing flesh without cutting all the way through. For finer details, switch to a No. 1 blade; for larger sections, use a No. 3 blade. Step 6 To Carve Face Wrap lights evenly around jar, securing strands with tape so that lights don't touch. Set jar inside pumpkin to test design. If some details appear less bright than others, remove lights and scrape more flesh from inside using fleshing tool. Step 7 To Add Hands Size clock-hands template as needed. Print, and cut out with scissors. Trace onto black card stock, and cut out. Align bases of hands. Secure them to the center of clock with sewing pin. Step 8 To Add Hands Reinsert lights. week forty-three - comfortably numb
"hello is there anybody in there? just nod if you can hear me" ~ scissor sisters (originally by pink floyd, of course) - week two (or week 1.b, as i'm doing two a week to catch up) of 'bring a friend' month: jack. jack and i met through student theatre about seven months ago; he was in a show i was photographing at the time. he's a tiny, tiny man - so much so that a nickname i and another friend have for him is "cupcake" - who is more often than not spectacularly dressed, and he kind of looks like david tennant. moreover, he's a talented actor and pretty amazing at drawing- rarely seen without a notebook to doodle some bizarre, fantastical burton-esque creature in. he's working on designs with me for a production of "king lear" i am directing midway through next year. he and i are dating.
