Transmission disassembly process

Here is a simplified diagram of the transmission, and a photo of the junkyard transmission before disassembly:





Removing the black end cover gives easy access to fifth gear, even when the transmission is installed in the vehicle:




If the transmission is out of the vehicle, a bit more work reveals the rest of the gears, and the two main shafts can be removed:





After the two shafts are removed from the case, it takes a big press and a lot more work to remove the bearings and gears from the shafts:





After all that work, the only parts I need from the junkyard transmission are from second gear. Note that the smaller diameter gear
is one solid piece with the input shaft, so I cut it off the shaft before taking the pieces to the machine shop:
